I just got back from the movie. Wow. It was incredible and extremely well done but I cried so hard!! I wish there was more Fili in the movie. I thought his death was very true to his character but there was no more thought about him once he died which makes me sad. He was a valuable member and its like they all forgot about him.

At the end of the road I was a mess. I feel your pain!

I saw it yesterday again for the third time and, holy cow, it still is soo painful. :( My rants on Fili under the cut, if you are interested.

Fili's death has been so sudden and unexpected - I mean, I knew that he wasn't going to survive, but... yeah, I haven't imagined something like that, in that moment, in that way. Yet he stayed loyal to his family and friends till the very end: he was terrified because he knew that he was going to die, but he begged them to run for their lives. He has always tried to protect them all during all the journey and, as you said, his end was very true to his character.

But don't forget that Dwalin couldn't cope to watch him die and in fact he turned his face away; that Kili ran to battle because of his rage and sorrow; that I've never seen such pain in Thorin's face until that moment; that Bilbo couldn't literally move from his place for seconds, because he couldn't believe his friend was gone.

I agree that after that scene Fili wasn't mentioned anymore, but there was a battle to fight - sorrow would have come after it. But at the end everything was so quick that we found ourselves back in The Shire in a blink of an eye. That's why I'm praying all the Valars for something more in the EE. We need more Fili! We need more everything. 

I honestly hoped to see more of him in this last movie, but I guess it follows perfectly the previous two, being shadowed by his little brother and the side love story. I feared it, but I was prepared, it couldn't be any different. :(

In any case: the few moments we have are precious and we will never forget our brave little lion, right? :')

a little bit about the arkenstone as thorin's heart and the acorn as bilbo's heart

((the arkenstone being the ~heart of the mountain~ and the acorn already having been established as bilbos emblem almost, eg his buttons))

lets go chronologically! one the goals of the quest is for thorin to reclaim the arkenstone, to essentially find his heart, his soul, his love and bilbo is hired to do this exact job to burgle and find his heart.

bilbo picks up the acorn in beorns house after the events on the carrock, having found his hearts purpose to go help this dwarf reclaim his homeland (and his heart)

in erebor, bilbo steals the arkenstone from under the nose of smaug (bilbo stealing thorins heart and rescuing it from dragon sickness) 

thorin confronts bilbo about the arkenstone, ‘did you find it?’ ((did you find my heart? have you found a way into it?))

ok now into bofa, thorin is searching for the arkenstone and cut to bilbo thinking about how he already stole his heart; and how it was physically lost in the gold (((how in thorin’s dragon sickness his only love was gold but eventually shifts to bilbo after he steals it)))

ACORN SCENE!!!! bilbo shows thorin his heart, his love for home, and thorin smiles because bilbo has his heart in his pocket

MITHRIL SCENE when thorin drags bilbo off ‘someone has stolen it. the arkenstone.’ ((someone has stolen my heart!!!!!!! [panics] )))

the negotiation scene with bard thrandy gandalf and bilbo, essentially “how is thorins heart yours to give????” “i took it as my share of the treasure it was the only thing i wanted in erebor” 

battlements scene, bilbo reveals how he has given thorins heart away, sacrificed his own happiness in love for the greater good of the world, (((YOU STOLE MY HEART)))), thorin banishes him for betraying his love

the painful scene ;____; thorin tells bilbo to plant his trees, plant his acorns and to do something meaningful with your heart and your love, bilbo does so and buries his heart in the ground and buries thorins heart next to him in the mountain, in both their homes where they belong with bilbo being a naturalistic hobbit and thorin a dwarf of stone

but even after the death of their hearts, life goes on and trees grow from seeds - bilbos love goes on to become frodos constant in his life, though his heart is forever connected to thorin like how oak trees will always grow from acorns   

aka that one quote where bilbo is the heart of the movie and thorin is the s o u l
