BASICALLY i think falco is from the sort of upbringing where morals break down and ones priorities are short-term survival goals. he has trouble thinking in the long-term. he’s not like slippy and fox who have lived in a society their whole lives and just understand that things like food and order will always be present, he’s seen the ultimate “everyone for themselves” nature of the universe and is wired to put his survival first
i think when he and leon first met leon immediately clocked him as another sociopath. falco immediately took offense at this; falco doesn’t like to be “read,” and also being young he still has a bit of faith in things like law and justice, he sees fox and slippy effortlessly being fraternal and affectionate with each other and he doesn’t want to think about how he might be broken in a way that keeps him from doing the same, and also leon is yucky.
leon has set out to break falco and make him admit he lacks that bit of humanity that fox and slippy have; “to play pretend all day must be so exhausting!” tbh he’s kind of right. falco struggles to motivate himself “for the greater good” and thinks he’s some kind of evil deep down. he has to give in to his innate selfishness and reframe things such that “defending the lylat system” -> “if this place blows up where will i live” “being a team player -> defending my friends because they’re MINE”
