A tank of brown corrosive gas explodes. A cloud of the shit is rolling towards a crowd you're in. In the panic, your pet is freaking out and a toddler gets separated from her parents. You can scoop one of them into your arms and book it. And you pick the dog. Unforgivable.

In orbit around a black hole, a cathedral drifts. Swarms feed the void, and a disk of light feed the church. The void, the light, the floating device, all alone together. Everything else to see has drifted away from view.

Inside, for miles and miles, ostensibly human cells live mounted on tiny chips, carefully measured and manage by nanoscale priests. The mechanical devotees monitor every feature of their Saint, keeping her almost impossibly cold, for posterity.

Every few aeons, and getting longer and longer each time, the Saint is heated, gently, gently. The glass-like water-coolant mixture in her cells thaws, her synapses spark with activity. For the briefest of moments, she does her duty. She experiences joy. Maybe she continues with a thin sliver of a prayer. Her dreamlike haze begins to slow again. It's time to conserve energy. It's time to sleep.
