My problem with "Redheads < DID"
Something that annoys me a bit is people using stats like "more people have DID than the amount of red haired people, so think about how mean redheads you know and realise that there's so many systems out there!!"
Yes, more people have DID (>1.5%) than people having red hair (1%)... Globally...
Every region of the world has a different percentage of redheads, I'll list some here:
Some Western/European countries: US: 2-6%, Australia: 3.5%, England: 6%, Scotland: 13%, Ireland: 10%, France: 5%. European average: 6%
The rest of the world: I sadly couldn't find any percentages or population numbers on redheads outside countries with a majority population of people with European descent, but other ethnicities than Europeans have red hair of course + redhaired Western/European immigrants will also add to the redhaired population of any country
The percentage of DID systems also vary from country to country, since some places have a higher chance of a young child experiencing prolonged trauma. And regions within a country will have different percentages too, where fx poverty leads to more trauma on average than a rich neighbourhood upbringing
So my point is that you can't trust the number of DID systems by how many redheads you have seen. If you're from Scotland, you will most definitely see way more redheads than DID systems. But if you live in fx China, Rwanda, or Uruguay, you will probably run into more DID systems than gingers
So what example could I use instead? I'm not exactly sure what the best example would be, but I would say something like: "1.5% is about 1 in 67 people. How many friends do you have on social media? How many people are in your workplace? How many people were/are in your school? How many people live in your city? Region? Country? 1.5% can seem like a small number, but when you put it into perspective it really isn't, right?"
If anyone has a better example, please feel free to add it!
TL;DR: I recommend not using the "redheads < DID systems" point when explaining how common DID. It isn't true on a regional level, so maybe use something like "1.5% is 1 in 67 people, that's a lot when you think about how many people that are at/in your work/school/city/country/ect"
