Hey - if you fear youâre faking your mental illness bc you identify with basically every illness you read about, thatâs probably bc there are huge amounts of overlap between diagnoses as currently defined and not because you are a Terrible Personâ˘. Plus this is a SUPER common fear among people with mental illness (thanks society) and I donât think that worrying about this means itâs actually true!
also itâs very common to have mental illness that doesnât fit neatly in one box or requires multiple diagnoses in order to cover all your symptoms. Thatâs bc the labels are inadequate - not bc youâre extra fucked up or bc youâre faking it.
I CANâT STRESS THIS SHIT ENOUGH, LIKE DAMN SON
Mental illnesses are not like (most) physical diseases, where one thing (like a pathogen) causes some of all of a collection of symptoms. Mental illness diagnoses are usually just collections of symptoms that tend to go together (and often have many many different possible causes, like depression). So having symptoms that donât neatly fit into a diagnosis is normal because diagnoses are more like trends and less like concrete things that define a person
types of healthy coping skills
1. self-soothing
comforting yourself through the 5 senses
Touch: stuffed animals, stress balls, taking a bath, a soft blanket
Hear: music, audio book, guided relaxation
See: snow globe, glitter, calming images, art, anything that pleases you visuallyÂ
Taste: tea, mints, gum
Smell: lotion, candles, incenseÂ
2. distraction
removing your focus from the stressor for a period of time
puzzles, art, crafting, reading, movies, gaming, exercise, being social
3. opposite action
doing the opposite of the impulse that aligns with a positive emotion
affirmations, inspiration, lighthearted and encouraging focus
4. emotional awareness
identifying and constructively expressing what youâre feeling
journaling, listing emotions, using a emotional identification chart, drawing, therapy
5. mindfulness
centering and anchoring yourself to the present moment
meditation, guided relaxation, yoga, breathing exercises, candle gazing, going for a walk
6. ask for help
this is important to do when you feel like your coping skills are not enough or they are too negative and detrimental Â
therapy is ideal for helping a person create a healthy coping strategy and incorporate it into their lifeÂ
*a coping skill is considered healthy if it helps you to deal with stress more positively, does not hinder your progress, and isnât harmful physically or mentally. A coping skill can become negative when it is used to completely avoid dealing with the stressor.Â
do u ever lay in bed and get really sad about ur favorite person because theyre not in the bed with u
tbpdfw you literally daydream abt having stable relationships w ppl who genuinely care for u
that bpd feel when people donât comfort you anymore or even act sympathetic when youâre upset because you know theyâre tired of you crying all the time
Me:*is dramatic and tells people to leave me alone when Iâm having a bad bpd episode*
*is left alone*
Me: Well shit. this is the opposite of what I wanted.
ok but it's so comforting being in bpd tumblr bc i finally see all these people talking ab the problems that i keep bottled up all the time and joking ab them and making memes ab them and writing real feelings ab them and i feel like im back where i belong with people that understand me
daily reminder to click a button so you can give free food to a shelter!!
if every one of my followers did this, we could give more than 85 meals to less-fortunate animals. for free.
AH HHA ITS BACK YES PLEASE IT TAKES A SECOND OF YOUR TIME AND A LIFE OF AN ANIMAL
concept: people who donât have bpd stop reblogging bpd centric posts
Therapist: You have to learn to walk the middle path Me, a borderline: is that the one to the left or the right?
my cutest selfies from spring break
hey guys this is just a reminder to take a break from tumblr every now and then
especially if youâre following a lot of bpd blogs
i know it can be super helpful to recognize youâre not alone and to post about your strugglesÂ
but it can also be pretty toxic to be constantly bombarded with negative posts and thoughts like that
my mood usually goes for the worst once i log on so i try to only come on here when im already feeling bad
so try not to be on here too much if it will just surround you with bad bpd thoughts and remind you of a lot of negativity that was not present at the time
Can you please talk about the self-diagnosis thing because I self-diagnosed myself with borderline personality disorder and for various reasons I can't see a professional about it, and it doesn't feel real, it doesn't feel like I have the right to say I have BPD, and it's making me feel so confused and lost and I need to hear that it is real and idk please just can you talk about it more
iâm not too sure what you want me to talk about but these are exactly the kind of reasons that self-diagnosis needs to be recognized!!
i also have reasons that i cannot see a professional. the main thing anyone will say once you say you are self-diagnosed is âdonât do that. see a professionalâ without realizing that many many people cannot do that (for financial reasons, social reasons, family reasons, so many things)
being able to see a professional is a big privilege that would be great to have but unfortunately many do not. and thatâs something a lot of anti-self-diagnosis people donât recognize.Â
it does you no harm to say that you are self-diagnosed borderline. if you are ever able to see a professional (which i hope you are someday!) it is very helpful for them to have something to work off of - âI think I have BPD and this is whyâ is a lot more helpful than âi donât feel good, whatâs wrong with me.â  self-diagnosing also makes it easier for you to find resources to help yourself.  you can talk to others with bpd about how they cope, or look up what methods can help with bpd.  these resources are much more available when you have self-diagnosed than if you just had the experiences and didnât know what to call them
in addition, what is the harm in self-diagnosing? thereâs no change - you donât suddenly get bpd if you self-diagnose with bpd, so why are people so against calling it bpd? if you have the symptoms and experiences, then that isnât going to change by putting a label on them. if i have bpd and have self-diagnosed it, then people will try to say âno you donât, you need it diagnosed.â itâs not like i donât have the disorder until a professional tells me i do.Â
tl;dr self-diagnosis is valid and good.Â
me, yelling: i don't need anyone! i'm fine!! i can do everything by myself! i'm a loner!!! i don't need affection or love or friends!!!!
me, two minutes later, sobbing: pay attention to me
all arguments against self-diagnosis are fucking dumb tbh
having a favorite person is killing me i make plans based around it and spend money based around it and choose classes based around it and have breakdowns based around it and
