My ancestors, watching me dump an entire stick of cinnamon, two cloves, an allspice berry, and a generous grating of nutmeg into my tea, sweetened with white sugar and loaded with cream, while I sit in my clean warm house surrounded by books, 25+ outfits for different occasions, and 6 pairs of shoes, in a building heated so well I have the windows open in mid-autumn:
Our daughter prospers. We are proud of her. She has never labored in a field but knows riches we could not have imagined.
I like this so much better than the idea that our ancestors would be embarrassed or ashamed of us for beingĀ āsoftā or some crap like that.
My ancestors, who lived through communist insurgencies, American interference in said insurgencies, the literal Holocaust, generational poverty and trauma, fleeing oppressors since we first wandered the deserts, watching me bake lavish sweets for my loving partner whoās never raised a hand to me and respects my desire to never have children and remain financially and socially independent with a domesticated animal that they used to worship tears through my one bedroom apartment filled with soft blankets, bright dyes, and good smells after having suffered a multitude of hardships that maybe arenāt the literal Holocaust are still deeply traumatic and effect me to this day:
Iām glad she made it.
The very best part about this is that, whatever trauma your ancestors went through is literally in your bones. It is written in your DNA.
If one day, a hundred years from now, your children or your childrenās children go through some incredible apocalyptic nonsense, they will already be equipped to survive. The hardships your ancestors endured mean you and your line will always be prepared to soldier through more if necessary.
And shit, letās not undersell ourselves. 2020 has been a massive shitshow of disease, continuing wealth inequality, and civil unrest. The reason you havenāt completely lost it this year is because your ancestors prepared you for thisāthey already did it, in less comfort. That you get to endure it in more just made their job easier.
Your ancestors, watching you survive a pandemic, a Depression, and civil unrest by baking bread, wearing your mask and social distancing, and organizing all while trying to avoid assholes doing the exact opposite: YES! Our descendant already knows how to prosper during these uncertain times for they have inherited our knowledge and strength. They have added to it comfort and prosperity to retreat to, to recover their fighting spirit! They shall endure.
This might actually be my favorite thing anybodyās added that Iāve seen so far, thank you.
If you didnāt hear it today, Iām proud of you. Youāre trying to get better, trying to be kind, trying to be the best you that you can be. Iām so proud of you.
