No you cannot fix your entire life at 2am. Go to bed.
Tfw you almost have your bandage chewed off but mom catches you and puts a fresh clean bandage on your foot.
My dog cut his foot running around the yard and has been mad at me ever since for bandaging his foot, then taking him to the vet to get stitches, then giving him his medication so he wouldn't get an infection, then keeping him from chewing off his bandage. This is a creature I am inconveniencing myself a lot to keep healthy and alive, and he doesn't even know he's being a metaphor for writing. He's just very INSULTED OK
Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby (1938) dir. Howard Hawks
I love this movie, because it is your classic "one damn thing after another" plot, but funny instead of action. We start with shenanigans on a golf course, and end with two people hanging from a brontosaurus. It's a great study in escalation. (Also, they had to film the leopard scenes with a split screen because the leopard was too dangerous to have actors next to him.) (Also also, I would love to have a robe like the one Cary is flouncing around in.)
get to know me tag game
thanking @justnerdy15 for tagging me!
Rules: Answer all the questions, then tag 9 other people you want to know better.
Me: No, because I'm shy and that makes me feel weird.
Three Ships: You have no idea how boring I am about this. I'm old. My ships are like, Newsies ones. Aziraphale and Crowley. These are *barely* ships. These are practically canon.
First Ship: probably the Swordspoint boys, Alec and Richard. Again, they are canon. But they are such (problematic! hoo boy!) babes.
Last Song I Listened to: Unfair question, because I had the vinyl out tonight, but it was Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione because it's light jazz and I was *trying* to make my house calm down enough to finish editing this stupid chapter. It only sort of worked. Before that was Dan Avidan doing covers.
Last Movie I Watched: Sharpe's Company, because I had a cold and I wanted to watch men stalk around in historical costumes, occasionally shirtless, beating up the French.
Currently Reading: Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen. And a book about neighborhoods. And a stack of SF&F magazines--just read a brilliant short story about a Martian train station--and The Scarlet Circus, and a horror book called The Hollows about snow-spider things with little hand-feet (lil hands for feet). And a pile of New Yorkers that I can't get through fast enough. And some things for my special interest. In retrospect maybe this is why I'm behind on my TBR.
Currently Watching: All Creatures Great and Small, for the knitwear (I knit), the teapots, and the sweet brown-eyed cows. Maybe I will get bored and start Daredevil again.
Currently Consuming: A Manhattan, made with Bullit bourbon and the good cherries from Italy.
Currently Craving: a room with a locking door and about three days of silence. I feel like I could get so much writing done then, but realistically I'd need a room with no internet and a locking door and an automatic supply of snacks.
I thought to myself, "kids are off school, maybe I will write today"
(I do not know why I thought this, it has never happened)
Anyway they built samurai armor out of the recyclables and invented lore that they needed to tell me, how did your day go?

This podcast is telling me to "listen to my body" so I will know when to drink water or whatever and I would like to point out that I stopped listening a long time ago because my body is "always on fire" and "often full of ghosts", so, checkmate
[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled “do not stand at my grave and weep” after the poem by mary elizabeth frye. the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, “do not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.” page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, “i am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.” the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, “when you awaken in the morning’s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.” the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, “i am not there. i did not die” / end id]

Wrote all day today, ended up with less words than when I started, but PERHAPS the words are in the correct order now? We'll see; seems fake.

Spring is for Baby Goats
Have you ever seen a baby goat?
They go *sproing sproing sproing* at basically all times. Even if you're a human who spends most of February and March resenting the rain and the grayness you can't help but be encouraged when you see the baby goats getting born and sproinging around. (Where do I live? not a city.)
I can't help but notice that as my northern-hemisphere days get longer, my writing ideas also start going *sproing*.
I think we expect to be able to write at a constant pace at all times, through all seasons, although this makes no sense. I myself write much slower in the winter (when I have a lot of other responsibilities and when I understand entirely why the ancient pagans were pretty sure nature was so pissed off she DIED).
If you are a writer feeling bad about your output, consider this might not be a productive season for you. Baby goats do not usually go *sproing* in midwinter. Be kind to yourself, take care of yourself, and sooner or later your *sproing* will appear.
