@artisticpunz wanted it, so here is the darker version of the s1 finale that i had in mind:
(i’m rather under the weather at the moment, so i may come back to expand on this in the reblogs if i think of more.)
-“set yourself free” should still happen, i think, but before that, i want rapunzel’s genuine reaction to being locked in another tower. no soft gasp and looking mournfully out the window. i want screams and panic attacks. she’s earned it. (give me her glaring at her mother in silence as she explains that it’s “out of love”. give me her letting go of the idea that these people are better than gothel.)
-scarier automatons! give them claws! make them pointier! you can leave the original automaton’s design alone, and imply that varian specifically built these to be deadlier.
-scary varian. he did manage to creep me out a few times in the original show, but i’ve said before that he should look worse. he should look like a kid who’s been in hiding due to being hunted down like an animal, starving, and living next to a suspended corpse for three months. his hair should be a stringy, greasy mess and his eyes should be dark-circled and his dialogue should be lurching-mumbling-laughing-broken.
-varian would pin ruddiger down by the scruff and inject him with the serum onscreen. he’d step back and beam with delight as the creature transforms, then turn and point toward the castle. the monster would rush for it.
-cassandra does not apologize to her father for being disappointed that he’d send her away.
-lean more into the propaganda! varian says “something dark is coming for you…”, “your king refuses to acknowledge it”, etc., and people are confidently shaking their heads. maybe some even put their hands over their ears. when frederic delivers his “let’s attack varian” speech, the crowd is listening attentively, ready to cheer.
-way more stakes in the robot battle. people need to lunge out of the way just in time, and the ground needs to shake with the force of the claws plunging where they’d just been. very few quips and funny moments. just adrenaline.
-a moment where varian grabs king frederic’s sword and holds it to his own throat. the man’s eyes would get hungrier— he’s looking at a problem that needs solving, and could be about to solve itself— and varian rounds on rapunzel.
“do you see?” he practically screeches. “do you see what he— what he wants, what he’s been—“
the conflict is clear on rapunzel’s face, but she reminds herself what is happening, and demands to know where her mother is.
-the queen would always be chained up by her ankles. no weird scene where her wrists are the only thing that’s tied and she’s just standing there awkwardly (like… just run, your majesty). she’d also be fighting against the last remnants of the sleep drug, which would allow varian to manhandle her like he does during one of his monologues (like… just headbutt him, your majesty).
-hallucination quirin… putting a shadowy hand on varian’s shoulder… he rests one on the side of varian’s head, and from his thumb leaks an imaginary droplet that looks as though varian is shedding a black tear… no one sees it but us.
-the idea i had in a previous post: the automaton varian controls has one-way glass. the characters only see redness, while varian can look at them. rapunzel assumes this is another independently-moving automaton, and that varian has retreated. the scene progresses as normal until she lets her rocks plunge through it. she hears a scream from inside, and the guards drag varian out. he’s got a bloody wound on his cheek, tearing through his ear. a wound that will later scar, being a reminder to them both. rapunzel will have to look at that damage as they try to forgive one another later.
-the handcuffs the guards put varian in would not be too big like they are in the show. for starters, that looked a little ridiculous, and secondly… i know corona has child-size handcuffs. even aside from its propaganda and the darkness under its surface, we saw them on angry and catalina.
-a shot of varian putting up a fight until he’s restrained.
-frederic’s last speech is met with a weary coldness from rapunzel. she nods along to his promises, and manages a complicated sort of smile when she sees the lanterns, but she doesn’t forgive him.
-a shot of varian looking up at the lanterns through the bars, their light reflected in his eyes. (he’s participated in the festival since he was a child. it was the only thing that made him feel united with corona, and now it is permanently defining him as “other”.)
-rapunzel being evidently shaken from more than just using that power. she’s never made someone bleed, and she wants to see if varian’s okay. but she’s also frightened, furious at him, and, more than anything, she just wants to leave. eugene and cass reassure her that varian doesn’t deserve her help (foreshadowing their own arcs in confronting their neglect), and the last shot is of their caravan departing.
‼️i know this is a disney show. i know the animation wasn’t that great in the first season. i’m just Using My Imagination here.‼️
