What are some good whump tv shows you'd recommend?

wellll. let me see. 

1. Supernatural. i mean, people talk about how all this show does is beat up the Winchester brothers, and, well, it’s not wrong. honestly, some of my all time favorite whump is from this show.

2. Merlin. it’s not dwelt on nearly as much as it needs to be, but this entire show is fraught with whump and angst and basically either Merlin or Arthur (or both) being in life threatening situations and / or hurt. (s5 is particularly delightful.)

3. Stargate: Atlantis & Stargate: SG1 - mind you, the term whump was born amidst the copious amounts of h/c that surrounded these fandoms; John Sheppard (my faaav), Rodney McKay and Ronon Dex spend a lot (and i mean, a lot) of time getting beat up in SGA, and Daniel Jackson, Cameron Mitchell and Jack O’Neill do pretty well for themselves in SG1 too. ;)

4. Graceland. Mike Warren is pretty much the epitome of bad luck… and he seems to get hurt a lot. and when he’s not getting hurt, he’s extremely angsty. and the whump is pretty decent and accurate. 

5. 12 Monkeys. whump aside, this show is fantastic. really fantastic. and of course, the whump doesn’t hurt either. ;) James Cole spends most of his time sick / bleeding / healing from gunshot wounds and / or dying from the effects of time travel… in the 1st season especially, he’s whumped rather well, as the side effects just keep getting worse, and he just keeps getting sicker. 

6. The Flash. talk about angst… and whump. s2 didn’t seem quite as whumpy to me (there were some pretty good moments though) but s1 is absolutely brimming with h/c. 

7. Arrow. honestly, considering how many times Oliver Queen has been shot, stabbed, thrown around, poisoned, etc, he really should be dead. regardless, he’s pretty when he’s hurt, so i’m not complaining. ;)

8. Smallville. to be honest, i think Smallville is the show that got me started on whump; there are so many good clips on YouTube of Clark Kent being exposed to kryptonite (because, hello, that’s the only way to hurt him, so let’s use the heck out of it), you can’t help but get addicted. ;)

9. Daredevil. once again, angst, whump, heroic sacrifice and idiotic lying obviously to protect the ones he loves and you have yourself one very beat up hero who is the absolute worst at coming up with excuses for his many injuries.

10. Once Upon A Time. Killian Jones. need i say more? @killian-whump

11. Teen Wolf. yet another list of people who should be dead, severely (and permanently) injured and / or brain damaged. Stiles is my personal favorite - so, therefore, he’s my favorite to see whumped - and it definitely doesn’t helps that Dylan O’Brien is so damn good at acting the part. 

12. The X-Files. of course, the entirety of TXF is pretty much Mulder!whump, so there’s that. (and some of it is quite fantastic - when you aren’t being utterly grossed out and horrified.)

13. Legend of the Seeker. this show is probably the whumpiest i’ve ever watched. honestly, it’s incredible how much a human being can be injured and still remain so goshdang attractive. (perks of a creative license, i suppose…) 

14. Lost. if you watch this show and if you have a favorite character and if you want to see them whumped and if you haven’t yet… just hang in there. this is one of the most tortured groups of people in tv history, and chances are, it’ll get to them eventually. 

15. Farscape. John Crighton. no one has ever made going mad look so attractive (and painful) before. 

16. Person of Interest.  if anyone has been shot as many times as John Reese in real life, i personally believe they would resemble something that looked like swiss cheese. really. the man is a bullet magnet. 

17. Atlantis. from sword fights to poisonings to voodoo dolls to randomly passing out, Jason is a perfect example of someone who lives to be hurt. (just sayin’.)

18. H50. despite the propensity to ignore side effects, accurate timing (accurate….anything, if i’m being honest…) and medical care, both Steve and Danny usually end up in the hospital at least once per season for something relatively serious. and there are oodles of small, (b)romantic h/c moments scattered throughout the series.

ahem. well. that should give you something to go on. ;) i only intended to name a few, and, well, you can see what happened. ;) i know there are a million more out there that i haven’t named, so if anyone has anymore to add, feel free to do so! (*every show i’ve listed has links to anything i may have posted concerning them in the title.*)

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

one more thing. if a character ascends to godhood/divinity/some form of power that makes them practically omnipotent and no longer human. and they had a partner before that who didn’t rise with them. you are legally required to make that situation as terrifying as it would rightly be. it’s bad enough to get the attention of a god. it is ruinous to be loved by one. that is not the person you knew anymore. that is something that never has to let you leave, or have secrets, or disobey it. it will fix every problem you so much as glance at, and it will shower you in grace and gifts until you drown, and it will make you a holy artifact in its own story. you have to understand, it doesn’t remember how horrible death is, so it strikes you to cinders like a snide comment and brings you back with an apology it needs you to accept. that is how it’s going to love you forever, because it might not be inclined to let you die.

or, if you must depict women maintaining that shit, at least be interesting about it. I can actually buy someone shaving/putting on makeup if that’s their way of coping, something they do to tether themselves to the past or an ellusive feeling of normalcy. So show me the EFFORT put in, yeah? Show that woman risking a zombie horde because she spotted a fucking tube of scarlet lipstick and christ she hasn’t seen that color in five years but it’s what she wore on her first date with her now-dead husband. Show me the girl who is quietly starting to fucking lose it but covers it up with fanatical commitment to her appearance because if she gets these eyebrows right, maybe no one will notice how she stares at things that aren’t there. I find it completely plausible that some women would go to incredible lengths to maintaining their appearance, because they’ve been socialized all their lives to caring about it, because it’s a part of their identity. So show me how that part gets negotiated with once the world has gone to hell.

sitcom whump. a goofy situation suddenly turns very serious.

romcom whump. a meet-cute transforms into a meet-hurt, and the love interests must face the possibility of their potential future being ripped away from them.

musical whump. the characters are so happy-go-lucky… until they aren’t.

turn that genre upside down on them! suddenly there’s no laugh track. there’s no jokey, low-stakes humor. whumpee is bleeding and terrified, and caretaker can’t act like everything is okay anymore.

if you're trying to get into the head of your story's antagonist, try writing an "Am I the Asshole" reddit post from their perspective, explaining their problems and their plans for solving them. Let the voice and logic come through.

Hyperbonkers Toxically Yuri basically drives the entire show. Pearl/Rose is 60% of Steven's Issues; the first big event episode climaxes with a paean to the power of nontoxic yuri but then ends with other characters EXTREMELY MISSING THE POINT to the point they emit nightmares; there's a whole arc about Pearl repeatedly tricking her friends into a threesome; the movie is the vengeance of a dumped manic pixie clowngirl; and the Diamonds (WD in particular) definitely have some kind of oneesama shit going on.

Pearl/Rose is enough toxic yuri (I will create a new identity for you! I will compel you to keep our secret forever! I will fuck around on you but don't worry I'll always come back to you until haha I kill myself and leave you the baby to raise!!!!!!!!!) for six shows. But it's not a show about emotionally healthy people doing healthy things! Steven repeatedly tries to kill himself!

I also want to point out the het stuff is similarly deranged. Lars/Sophie is "what if the chubby girl fixated on the bad boy who impliedly fucks her on the sly (!!!!!) but is embarrassed to be seen with her and got so frustrated she made a big-deal punk band about it (so she's completely over him when he gets a glow up to UNDEAD CAPTAIN HARLOCK(!!!))" Greg breaks up a 5000 year toxic Yuri situationship by being the scrungliest hair metal guy in history. Steven gets a somewhat-requited crush and Pearl immediately projects her "what if I was a knight and I was willing to put my life on the line for you and it was kind of sexual" deal on to them so hard she creates a child soldier. Then Steven, to prove he's NOT his mom, tries to die for her without letting her die with him and she's so mad about not being allowed to die with him they break up for a bit.

Frankly the sheer density of characters eager to die for each other is somewhat alarming.

all of this of course forgetting the one "Stable" relationship is two small lesbians who are so attached at the hip they literally fused into one person, and have their own princess/knight dynamic [wow the diamonds sure love that one, wonder what thats about] and any time they have a MINOR disagreement about a major problem they usually cope by literally exploding apart, doing a shit ton of property damage, and then tearfully fusing right back together again, which is gorgeously juxtaposed by the fact that they can literally see the branching timelines of the future and so can TELL that there is literally no reality where this doesnt happen if they're fucking paying attention. which they usually arent. because they're too busy focusing on keeping steven alive

Pearl accidentally makes a child soldier because when you love someone and fight for them, it's because you were not built to be strong but for them you can anyway. People think you were built to sit pretty on a shelf but instead you can die for her again and again and again and again. Rose is in love with the transformations of life and growth and the living world and you are in love with the transformation of yourself, with being able to reinvent what you are not into delicate flower but terrifying renegade. You are in love with your potential, with the strength of your fragile hands, with being brutally efficient machine that takes bullets for her. Does Rose make you feel like you're nothing, no, no Rose makes you feel like you're everything. It's you that makes you feel like you're nothing. These feelings are the same thing. Don't look at me like that

I’ve seen people express confusion and frustration over human Vox’s hair so I made this little study focusing on Vincent and 1950’s hair. It’s a bit of a rush job but I hope people find it helpful! In regard to where his parting is, they just cartoon it to be on whatever side is facing the audience.

I’ll put the text under the cut. Also here’s my obligatory “I’m not a professional historian”; some photos may not be from the 1950’s and this is all based on my observations and opinions. So take this study with a grain of salt.

Studies of human Vox’s hair. His general shape is square but his hair is actually very swoopy

Side partings, short sides and waves were the general trends of 1950’s men’s hairstyling. Actors and rebels could be more dramatic with their styling than the typical professional. I think these three (Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn and Laurence Olivier) have the most Vincent-like hair.

Hair studies of young weatherman Vincent. To me, young Vincent looks like he has more volume in his hair, like a pompadour or greaser haircut. The pompadour was popular with the young, the rebellious and the working class. Businessmen kept them short, but longer ones were favoured by performers and the young (like Vincent..?).

Let’s look at trend setting Elvis Presley. See how his hair is slicked back at the sides, has a soft side parting and is swept up over the head into a soft, voluminous pompadour.

Hair studies of older Vincent. With older, bedraggled Vincent, let’s keep looking at Elvis and the pompadour. I think the style is closer to the short sides and waves of Errol Flynn, but this is a good example of how these product-heavy 1950’s hairstyles fall apart. Note the hair being slicked back on the sides, the side part (on the far side of Elvis’ head) and the stiff, product heavy strands falling in front of his face.
