ACBW: Saisons
As of today, Monday, May 16, American Craft Beer Week is now underway. This week perpetuates the beauty of craft beer and its roots. We pay homage towards the pioneers and original fathers of beer and its organic progression. Craft beer is the drive of maintaining history and exploring through innovation. The United States craft beer community continues to thrive and flourish through progressions of economic and political fluctuations, limitations, and common interests. The vicious cycle of market transformation in the beer community occurs 24/7, year-round. But this week in particular exhibits the exuberant pride of the craft beer community and all of its individuals.
In order to appreciate craft beer in America, sometimes we need to recognize the styles derived from history in other areas. One style that has experienced a resurgence in the beer community is Farmhouse ales, also known as Saisons. These farmhouse ales derive from Belgium, when farmers would brew the style to enjoy during the summer time. Saison yeast strains flourish in higher fermentation temperatures, resulting in a higher volume of esters and carbonation. Mainly compromised of pilsner malt, wheat is also sometimes used. Usually light to medium mouthfeel with notes of black pepper, ginger, citrus, slightly roasted malt, and florals.
To provide a few examples for you, let’s start with an authentic Farmhouse ale:
St. Feuillien - Saison
This lovely liquid is born and raised in Belgium. And then finds its fate in my mouth. St. Feuillien Saison is a quintessential portrayal of the style. A medium-bodied ale with bright orange translucency is packed with rich malt and yeast composition. A sweet bready/biscuit malt base is coincided by bursts of peach, lemon, orange peel, grapefruit pith, and subtle pepper. A complex liquid is jam packed into an 11.2 oz can?!?! That’s pretty damn impressive. Don’t overlook this petite monster.
River Horse Brewing Co - Farmhouse Saison
Now we’re back in the US of A!!!! River Horse is a tiny craft brewery in southern New Jersey. These guys produce larger than life beers that are available to most Tri-State / New England markets. This Saison is a touch drier with stronger notes of black pepper and lemongrass. A bit softer than St. Feuillien Saison with an earthier approach. Grab this beer while supplies last as it is a limited spring release!
Allagash Brewing Co - Saison
You didn’t think brewocracy was going to write a post on Belgian-influenced beer and NOT include Allagash did you?!?!?! No way, no how. Not now, not neva. Allagash is dear to our heart at brewocracy and we had to include their lovely Saison to help celebrate such a special week! This offering is true to style and one of Allagash’s hoppiest productions. This saison is perfectly balanced with a light to medium mouthfeel with solid carbonation and a semi-dry, slightly toasted malt base. Herbal, citrus, and grainy notes are tied in the end with a grassy hop finish. Truly divine.
Brooklyn Brewery - Sorachi Ace
One of Brooklyns wild cards, the Sorachi Ace can be a pleasant surprise to most unfamiliar craft beer drinkers. This offering is light with a ton of flavor. This ultra bready, ultra grainy saison is thoroughly hopped with Sorachi hops, providing a burst of lemon notes. Esters help facilitate a heap of herbal notes. Black pepper and honeydew are added complexities to the Ace as well. Want an extra luxury? Grab yourself a 750mL of Sorachi Ace.... because these bad boys are bottle conditioned with Champagne yeast to give a softer texture. Simply bliss.
Now that we’ve covered the bases with saisons, it’s now time to make a toast to the Belgian Beer Gods and whomever decided(s) to continue brewing this elegant, brash ale. To end the first night of ACBW in grand fashion, let us say.... drink responsibly. Over & Out.

The Baked Dozen
Alright folks! It’s hump day and I want a beer. I’m sure some of you would like a beer as well. Which is perhaps why you’re reading this blog right meow. Or maybe you’re reading this blog because you liked getting baked. Or maybe because you like the number 13. Well, what if I told you this post is pertinent on all 3 accounts? It is. So strap in your seatbelts boys and girls. Because shit

Lagunitas Brewing Co - Lucky 13
Woah!!!!! What do we have ourselves here?? In the words of the Lagunitas crew, it’s their “ultra-mega-mondo red ale. Lucky 13 was born on the 13th anniversary of Lagunitas Brewing! 13 grand ole years of brewing great beers and smoking great ganja!!!
This mondo large red ale stands at 8.8% ABV. A translucent amber/bronze ale provides firm head retention with and spotty lacing. Biscuit, rose petals, berries, and mango burst in the aroma. Mouthfeel is heavy with medium carbonation and a pungent finish. The residual sugars provide a base of molassas, hazelnut, toasted nuts and biscuit, balanced with hop bitterness and flavor of orange peel and subtle piny resinous notes.
Lucky 13 is a delicious conconction that challenges the drinker to consume it under 13 sips. Challenge accepted. And delivered. Can you imagine if this were available in a 13 pack?!?!? Then it would REALLY be called “The Baked Dozen.” I don’t know what Lagunitas would do without weed. Let’s not think about it. Instead, you can grab it in 6 packs at your local liquor stores. With an absence of dinner and a pint of Lucky 13 in my gullet, brewocracy is feeling as right as rain. Drink Responsibly. Over & Out.

Simmer Is Almost Here
This past Groundhog Day, the animal symbolized by Bill Murray did not see its’ shadow; therefore, the Ground Hog knows everything about everything... Al Roker ain’t got shit on him. Subsequently, we’re breaking out the speedos; not those silly Chubbies shorts all those frat boys are jerking-each-other-off about. Our thighs need to be free when simmer is near! Oh, what’s simmer you ask? A Typo? NO. It’s better.
It’s the most magical barley pop encompassing the transition of mediocre to epically, radically legendary. This means, it’s a spring/summer beer release that will brighten and blur everyones day. All day long son.
Sebago Brewing - Simmer Down : Session Ale
The younger, lighter, brasher brethren of Sebago’s Frye’s Leap and Runabout Red are among us. Last spring/summer, Simmer Down was a homerun; all palates were satisfied until Simmer Down hibernated, leaving a trail of desire and demand from the fortunate drinkers. Well now folks, it’s back.
This sessionable, sexual concoction consists of a light, balanced malt bill. Simmer Down’s 4.9% ABV status provides depth and drinkability for consistent shenanigans all day! Mouthfeel is light with just enough carbonation to stand against the tropical, citrus hop presence and slightly roasted malt taste. The last sip merely puts you in Simmer Down mode, chomping at the bit for more! Don’t we all love to Simmer Down? Of course!! But please, don’t say that in abbreviation. Drink Responsibly. Over & Out.

Does Beer Remedy The Common Cold?!?
Do placebos have positive effects on cancer victims?
Is coffee good for the heart?
Does marijuana provide health benefits?
Do one-legged ducks swim in circles?
One-legged ducks most certainly swim in circles, if not ovals. However, the jury may still be out to the other 3 questions listed above. Taboos, studies, perceptions, biases, personal preferences, ethics, and morals all contribute to substances that may or may not supplement our lifestyles in a positive way. Brewocracy just so happens to have a case of the common cold. But that doesn’t change our name to Common-Cold-Pussy-ocracy. Our name as Brewocracy is etched in stone, residing in the foundation of the Beer God Temples.
The rhetoric of beer remedying the common cold is neither here nor there in our particular circumstance. The rhetoric can lie in the eyes and palates of the beloved readers before us. We are aware of several note-worthy ties between beer and the common cold; all of which are beneficial to us; humans that drink awesomely, righteously, tubularly, godly beers...
Humulone, a chemical compound found in hops, is conducive towards the fighting of the common cold in adults. Having said that, you’re going to require a heap or HOP load of beers to accumulate a sufficiently qualifying amount of humolone to ward off any likes of the common cold. At this point, the state of black-out, dehydration, poor judgment, and enormous self-humiliation will severely outweigh the common cold by every stretch of the imagination. Not to mention, brewskis have been found to increase bone density, decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases, decrease the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and most importantly, been known to turn you into a God-Damned Sorcerer walking or stumbling all over Planet Earth.
In light of rationale and a full work day in foresight, let’s consume ONE beer in moderation with a HIGHER level of humulone to possibly remedy the cold but unequivocally nourish our gullets and state of minds...
Boulder Beer Company!! Nothing like big ole’ Boulders on the bosom of America!!! Boulder Beer is Colorado’s 1st craft brewery so one must pay homage to the mojo of such an entity. Bosoms and Mojos all over the place. I’m surprised they don’t have a mountain version of Austin Powers on the label.... But at any rate, Mojo is packed with Amarillo hops in the boil and dry-hopping stage to emphasize a substantial presence of humulone to that of a common pale ale.
Mojo is a deep, transparent gold, possessing quick retention and a thin, small white head. Not a zit.... the layer of bubbles on top; reminiscent of a mini mojo fro. Mouthfeel is medium with a pungent to semi-dry finish. Pale malt, grapefruit, grass, and blood orange form a balanced aroma. A 7.2% ABV provides heat through a sweeter, slightly pungent malt bill, which quickly fades to an earthy, resinous, citrus hop finish. This is a fundamental American IPA, stemming from the very roots of US craft beer as an entirety. With the vast experience and mojo derived from Boulder Beer, this beer probably got REALLLLL busy back in the day. But Boulder protects its mojo in sealed, sanitized, stainless steel equipment, inhibiting its components from any infections and wild yeasts. Therefore, the legend of the Mojo lives on, untarnished. Feel free to indulge, although not for the sole purpose of curing the common cold. Drink Responsibly. Over & Out.
