there was nothing quite as exhausting as a pile of paperwork — the strapping young man would have put in less effort while preparing for his N.E.W.T.s so many years prior to the current had he known it had such tasks. perhaps this was simply the rest the entire department deserved following the masked miscreants attack, one of which he was so lucky to avoid injury. had it not been for the powerful pull behind an old brick wall by one of his superiors, ST. MUNGOS would have gained another visitor. that’s what he chose to believe, anyway. surely it was the worst case scenario for his sudden rush of bravery, it was certainly a trait that was proving to not always be to his benefit.
the black and grey quill that he gripped between his fingers soon began to ache his wrist, and, had he not already been consumed by boredom, was enough reason to set it down on the piece of parchment and scurry out of the office for his break. the lad went in search of an earl grey tea at one of the many quaint shops along the cobblestone path, a pair of old black dice rolling between the inner parts of his fingers and the palm of his hand ( the small objects were always on his person and had been since he was a young boy — it calmed the anxieties he would often encounter throughout the day ).
the smooth and bitter taste of pressed coffee was normally preferred over that of the tea before him, however, with the thick cover of clouds dimming the day and ultimately deciding his mood, a tea seemed far more appealing to spend some time sipping at. a serene moment like this he would have spent writing in his leather bound journal — thoughts, memories, ideas — had his morning not already been filled with so much of it. pale brown irises would instead scan the faces of the others in dining, paying special attention to their bearings and using that to better understand the strangers that surrounded him. he came up with stories for each one of them, time lost as a result of his own little game. it was only after he shifted his position in the chair and felt the weight of the pocket watch press against his thigh, that he reached for it to check the time — hurrying back to work before he found himself in any real trouble.
the sound of flipping pages in a book pulled his attention toward the desk before the voice did, eyes resting on the book before lifting to her and eliciting a small smile from the lad. “the tea i just treated myself to was very well the best earl grey this world has ever seen,” his tone was lighthearted as he carried himself over to her and curled his arms against the top of the desk. “can’t give you much of anything else. today is a desk day, unless that’s something that you find exhilarating then by all means, glean pleasure from my bland life,” there followed a short pause, though if her eyes met his face it was clear his thought process hadn’t reached it’s end yet. his curiosity presented itself through the shift of his brows, his gaze remained on the dice in his hand. “has nobody else been in with anything worth hearing yet? figured there would be a few of our superiors that had leads to tend to.”
“the best earl grey the world has ever seen? wow...” her ruby red lips curled upward. she tapped her foot that was propped atop the other to a wrock guitar solo blasting in her mind. “riveting...”
“you’ll have to forgive me for my lack of excitement. admittedly, i do think i was expecting more.”
her sienna hues, framed by long lashes and bronze skin, flickered upward, having noted chance’s appearance in her peripheral vision. her eyes widened with one parts amusement, and two parts bemusement. “that sounds boring,” she snickered, then composed herself. “i mean, if i were a full fledged auror, i wouldn’t be working behind the desk at a time like this. that sounds like torture.”
as it was, she was stuck behind a desk and she hadn’t even finished her training yet. she sighed as she heard the tell tale thunk of one of her fellow trainees getting thrown into one of the cushioned walls as they practiced the assigned martial spells of the day. later, they’d move onto human transfiguration; important for disguising oneself if you found yourself in a case involving espionage. that was one of her weaknesses. no matter what, she’d always had a hard time blending in. if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have been singled out to help pick up slack around the department with the majority of the aurors being absent. having potential could potentially be ones downfall.
she really ought to be practicing. everyone else was following the curriculum twice as hard without their superiors there to supervise them. it was anyone’s guess how hard she’d be working later that night to catch up...
something occurred to her then.
tiffany grinned like a feline that’d caught the elusive mouse.
“nope,” she said, popping the p. “however, you, with your appearance-- my dashing upon dashing superior, have relieved me of my desk duty. i’m a free witch!” tiffany relished these words as she swooped her long legs off the desk, and flipped her raven waves off her shoulder. there was a gleam in her eyes. “and before you attend to what i’m sure would be a....” she tried to look serious, straightening her posture, “very productive desk day, let me remind you that us auror trainees are unattended, and you are now the highest ranking auror in the department. a superior by very definition!”
tiffany enchanted the incoming tips so that they’d pile themselves appropiately in her absence. while she let the fact she’d single handedly cancelled chance’s schedule, she picked up her duffle, which was charmed to look like a moving starry night. “i’m off to change into my gear. see you in a bit, TEACH.”
