Some favorite albums of 2015 (10, to be exact) 1. Jim O'Rourke - Simple Songs; I knew pretty quickly this wouldn't be topped. Like if a 70's style album like John Cale's "Vintage Violence" dropped in 2015. 2. Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs; This hasn't gotten a lot of attention over here despite the fact that she does most of what several critical and popular darlings this year do, but better, and with more ambition. Listen and you'll probably be similarly befuddled by the indifference. 3. Grimes - Art Angels; if Tumblr had an official soundtrack, this would be it, but I like it anyway. 4. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly; some of this doesn't wear well over repeated listens ("I remember you was conflicted..."), but the highs are incredible. 5. Thee Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated at Last; I hadn't kept up with them for a while (doesn't help that they apparently don't play here) and just heard this a few weeks ago. I didn't know they had a new line-up but this is pulverizing; maybe their best album. 6. Kamasi Washington - The Epic; 3-hrs of very impressive and accessible Pharoah Sanders-style jazz; this will take forever to absorb, enjoyably so. 7. Dick Diver - Melbourne, Florida; Most people are not going to think of F. Scott Fitzgerald when they see or hear this band's name, unfortunately for them, but "Waste the Alphabet" is one of the best songs of the year. 8. Julia Holter - Have You in My Wilderness; I sometimes wish her voice was more commanding, but everything else is 👌 9. Vince Staples - Summertime '06; one of the best examples of eerie, atmospheric rap that sometimes sound like it was produced by Slenderman (or several Slendermans) 10. Salad Boys - Metalmania; if you like vintage Flying Nun-style New Zealand rock this should prove pretty irresistible.

The 2000s Imaginary Jukebox

In the heady days before I forgot my Tumblr password, I posted Imaginary Jukebox playlists for the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s (all of which have also just been updated, incidentally). The idea was to create 50 “singles” (A and B side) by the same or similar artists from which a decent cross-section of music fans could find at least one thing they’d want to play. It took me a while to do one for the Aughts because I was less aware of what was going on musically at the time than the previous decades (even though two of them mostly preceded my birth). Indeed, some of these songs I just heard for the first time recently. All are a mix of my favorites or at very least things I can at least tolerate hearing (which rules out the likes of “Milkshake,” Sufjan Stevens, and all Coldplay other than the one below)).

I’ll See You Again In 25 Years - My Visit To The “Twin Peaks” Set In 1989

I’ve unearthed these pics of me as a goofy 12-year-old visiting the set of “Twin Peaks” in 1989. My mom won a raffle at my LA elementary school where the prize was to visit the set - they were shooting the beginning of Season 2 at the time, and they had moved their location from the Pacific Northwest to sound stages in Burbank, CA, where they had re-created all of the iconic “Twin Peaks” locations. The most surreal thing was that often the sets were built side-by-side, so I was able to step directly from One Eyed Jacks into Benjamin Horne’s office into Laura Palmer’s living room. The locations seen here are: Harold the meals-on-wheels hermit’s house (with Donna, Maddy and Harold), me with Mike the One Armed Man, The Double R Diner, Laura Palmer’s living room, One Eyed Jacks, the sheriff department’s jail, the piano in Donna’s living room, and Benjamin Horne’s office. On the day I visited, they were shooting the scene of Harold scratching his face menacingly with the rake - it adds a bit of amusing context to know that while Harold was raking his face, this funny-lookin’ kid was watching from off-camera! - Michael Lucid
