The presence of an understudy makes vividly clear the fact that a work of art is being freshly created each night. And no matter how practiced or experienced the actor on stage might be, his or her performance, like that of an understudy, has to be summoned and shaped anew, on the spot, under the spotlight.
Weāre thrilled to be mentioned in the New Yorker today along with some of our favorite understudies!
When a role has two understudies who gets to go on?
It depends! If you are a standby (as in not in the show, but waiting in the wings), you're up first. Otherwise, most roles usually have two covers, and its up to stage management and producers to make the call as to whom will perform.Ā
Do you know if Megan McGinnis has any performance dates in Sideshow? I've read that she's the standby for Daisy and Violet but she's not on the website so I'm a bit confused! If she is the standby though, presumably there's a chance she's got some scheduled dates, so thought I'd check with you!
No scheduled dates for either cover yet! Megan is fairly new to the production which may explain for the absence from the website. If we hear anything, we'll let you know!

SO many fantastic Broadway understudies performed yesterday at Broadway in Chicago, to promote upcoming national tours of their productions!
Producers of the TonyĀ® Award winning musical Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA,Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman and Stephen Kocis, have announced additional casting for the First National Tour launching in Providence, RI at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) onOctober 10, 2014.
Congrats Andy! We are so thrilled for you.

Midtown NYCs favorite green space was once again overflowing with theatre fans for week two of 106.7 FM's annual Broadway in Bryant Park series. Nikki M. James and the cast of Les Misrables made the audience forget about the heat as they belted out classics from the show including On My Own, I Dreamed a Dream and Stars. See Rocky stars Andy Karl and Margo Seibert perform at the week one event.

A huge part of understudying is imagining someone in a role different from what they usually play. We wish BRIDGES was still open so maybeĀ J. MichaelĀ could've had a shot at playing (or even understudying) Robert down the line!

Ā We do know that Melissa O'Neil is on as Fantine today and tomorrow's matinee (July 8th and 9th). She's also scheduled as Eponine July 23rd (matinee) through 27th.
In addition, an understudy always plays Jean Valjean on Thursdays. Nathaniel Hackmann will be on this week, Aaron Walpole will be on next.
Do you know what days Jessie Mueller and Anika Larsen are off in beautiful? I would love to see their understudies :D
Jessie had a scheduled vacation about a month or so ago, and has no other dates as of yet. We'll definitely let you know!
