I've got a few new projects in addition to my typical responsibilities, and I think it'd be good if I pulled off of social media (by which I pretty much only mean tumblr because I already gave up the rest) for a bit.

As per usual, same old song I love you and will miss you but it's time for a hiatus ~ ~ ~ Stealth update; it's been two weeks and I feel like I only got into the swing of not being on social media four days ago. Gonna extend the hiatus for a while.

My go-to mug lately is an Alice in Wonderland themed mug that I bought at a children's theme park gift store in New Orleans on a mini vacation with two friends (no sense them meeting me in my boring town) and so--like all my mugs--it reminds me of good times with people I care about.

It's a bit big and wide and the inside is dark orange

last night I poured a packet puree of tropical fruit into the mug and added some water and drank most of that but I left the sludge in the bottom and forgot about it

it blended so perfectly that when I took my cold-brew chai (golden lotus brand sells the powdered leaves and it's the best and no sweet is added that you don't add yourself) from the bottle in the fridge I thought the mug was empty

and I poured a dollop of cream in first because then pouring the chai in after would mix and meld it

and I saw the cream mix with the orange of the bottom of the mug

which I thought was empty

it looked like the mug itself was melting around the cream

or like paint was dissolving

THIS. Also, to prevent people from misquoting this poem in the future, here's the whole thing, written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller in 1946:

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

What's more Niemoller was a national conservative. He originally supported the Nazi Party, hoping it would bring about a national revival (as did many Germans), until Hitler proclaimed the supremacy of state over religion and Protestant churches, at which point he allied with other pastors and Lutheran organizations against Nazification. He was also anti-Semitic, making many pejorative remarks about Jews, such as them deserving persecution for crucifying Jesus and believing they should be kept out of any positions in the government. He was imprisoned from 1937-1945, during which time he reconsidered his earlier views.

This poem is a warning, not because Niemoller saw it happen. It is because this is his story. This poem is him saying "don't be how I was, because for however much you support a regime and the hate it doles onto the people marginalized and labelled for extermination, they will one day come for you, like they came for me". No one is immune from the prejudice of the state - there is never only one scapegoat.

Some myths I'll always remember:

* Are elephants scared of mice? (They only did that because they were in Africa and had access to elephants.)

* Will a bull run amok in a china shop?

* Is it better to run zig-zag or straight when chased by an alligator?

I love these because NONE of them turned out the way they expected. They went into all three with pre-conceived ideas of how it would go, and each time they "failed." Elephants WILL cower from mice. A bull moves very gingerly through a china shop. It doesn't matter how you run because ALLIGATORS WON'T CHASE YOU.

And each time, they reacted with just... pure glee. "Holy shit, we were wrong! Oh my god! This is great! We were so wrong!"

And that, to me, is what science is. Being excited about being wrong because either way it's information.
