funniest thing would be if when Queen Elizabeth dies or steps down and Charles is all ready to assume the throne, here comes King Arthur, Excalibur in hand, sauntering back from Avalon like “oof what a nap! thanks for keeping the chair warm I’m back to be king again”
like, given that “King Arthur isn’t actually dead, he’ll be back to be King again someday” is, like, an actual aspect of the legend and a thing that a lot of people purport to believe, has anyone ever actually tried it? showing up to buckingham palace claiming to be Arthur Pendragon, The Once And Future King, and assume the throne? does the british government have a protocol for checking whether someone claiming to be King Arthur actually is? does parliament have a secret picture of the Real Excalibur kept under lock and key, only viewed if someone claims to be King Arthur, that they can use to confirm or refute the identity of alleged Kings Arthur? if not, how do they deter every jackass with a sward from pretending to be him? does filing a false King Arthur report constitute treason?
The rules are simple. “Arthur” has to show up with a sword. They give the sword to the Lady of the Lake, and if she throws it back to the claimant, he’s legit and gets to be king again.
So the test for King Arthur’s identity falls to the even less officially identifiable Lady of the Lake. No one can even agree on which Lady, or which lake, is the official one, much less how to tell if you’ve got The Lady of The Lake. All of which suggests that all you need to accomplish this is one (1) sword, a willing female acquaintance, and a nearby body of water.
There isn’t even any requirement for “Arthur” to catch the sword, so the Lady can just javelin an epee right at him.
Well when you look at it that way, one might conclude that strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

“But [Tumblr’s] value, of course, is more than just what it isn’t, and what it points away from. Despite all the drama and discourse lurking in its corners, it’s easy to make your own Tumblr life as simple and as happy as you want it to be. There are no algorithmic threats lurking around every corner, no onslaught of promoted posts from politicians or influencers. More than anything else, Tumblr in 2020 is a self-sustaining ecosystem. It’s a semi-sealed and increasingly fertile terrarium, a nigh-impossible perpetual-motion machine of a platform going productively psychotic in its isolation.”
— @areyougonnabe, “The Ever-Mutating Life of Tumblr Dot Com”
Let’s be honest, going productively psychotic in isolation is this year’s mood.
Tumblr is a hellsite but goddammit its our hellsite
I’m in a google chat hangout with some other editor/writer types and there’s one guy in there just furiously jacking off to the importance of suffering in narrative and I’m one more “I just think it adds depth to our humanity” away from mailing him that 50 gallon drum of lubricant on amazon because jesus god my dude give it a rest.
This just got linked in the chat, and it’s totally gone over his head. He’s now talking about how comedians are some of the most depressed people ever and that’s why creative people are so depressed because we see humanity for what it is and I swear to god if he was wanking any harder to his own genius he’d be on fire.
I just tried to very patiently tell him that maybe his view was a little skewed toward pessimism and not an actual reflection of reality and he just told me not everything in the real world is safe spaces, sunshine and rainbows and if I’d ever known suffering I’d understand that.
It shouldn’t be possible to feel 5 other people separated by several thousand miles worth of distance pull back from their screens and brace for impact and yet.
”Thank you, for making an assumption about my character based on my refusal to agree with your belief that suffering is the pinnacle of human experience. I’ll be sure to keep your good opinion in mind literally never.
As for “if I’d known suffering” I’m not going to get into a personal pissing contest with you, but I will point out that there are two cancer survivors in this chat, and someone who lost a loved one recently, and would thank you kindly to refrain from further invalidating their concept of pain and strength with every single comment you make. You literally told one of them they hadn’t gone through enough in life to understand your perspective of the world, presumably based on that time a girl said no to you and how it reflected the overall narrative arc of your life wherein no one seems to realize the true genius of your mediocre shallow depths.
And if you think that was rude and I hurt your feelings I’d tell you I’m sorry but if you think about it, I’m really just helping you reach the highest form of human experience according to you. You’re welcome.
I’d also like to thoroughly refute your idea that our capacity for pain is our defining trait as a species, and instead politely argue that the true narrative intent behind exploring suffering is to point out our inherent capacity to survive it. More than that, to recover from it.
War is hell, people commit atrocities and death is inevitable and yet we hope.
Hope is a survival instinct. It is one of the purest, most human things we will ever experience and it’s fundamentally rooted in our DNA. We hope the dawn will come, we hope the branch will hold our weight, we hope the tiger will not eat us, we hope the rain will come and water our crops, we hope tomorrow there will be work so we might feed our families, we hope, we hope, we hope.
There will always be those who run toward danger, not to face their own morality, but to spare others from theirs. But it’s the people waiting on the other side to offer care and compassion who piece the world back together again.
We take pictures of sunsets and blue skies and make up stories about gold at the end of rainbows and if you don’t think creating art is a means of creating safe spaces with which to experience the full gamut of human experience and emotion through healthy and safe means, then my friend, we have a lot more to talk about than I currently have the patience for. But I’m willing to try if you are.
Secondly, your portrayal of grief in your narrative is not “the most accurately human” as you put it when C____ suggested it felt a little wooden. Which leads me to believe you really have no idea what the emotion feels like beyond a shallow passing acquaintance with the inconvenience of someone experiencing it. Otherwise you’d know people don’t only cry at funerals, but they also laugh. They tell jokes, they comfort each other through the darkness because that’s what we as a species have always done. We look into the dark never ending night of reality and hear the wolves howling at the mortality of the cosmos and we light fires and tell stories about the coming of the dawn and just generally stick together and hope tomorrow will be better.
And just while I’ve got your begrudging attention: the dark brooding loner hero protagonist you’re so in love with because you believe it in some way represents your superiority above others, is nothing more than the male equivalent of the “I’m not like other girls” trope. Discuss.”
Maybe you should send him 50 gallons of aloe instead.
Perfection.

Ah, good old Jimothy, he was such a sore sport about everything.
I’m gonna be honest, people pretending Bruce has an adoption addiction Is funny and all, but it’s starting to trick people into thinking he goes out searching for and wanting to put all these actual children in the line of danger when in reality they just sorta latch onto his leg while he stands there trying shake them off screaming “NO, I’M NOT DOING THIS AGAIN” ‘till he caves and teaches them jujitsu

@zainclaw I want you to know that my brain very urgently woke me up at 5:46am today to ask if I thought Venom liked ASMR videos.
Very loud sounds and certain frequencies of sounds are damaging to them, but listen, if humans sat on the sun it would kill us and fire burns us too, but people still like to sit in sunbeams and make fires in fireplaces and light candles. Humans pretty universally hate the sound of nails on a chalkboard and low-frequency sounds cause our lizardbrains to just start yelling anxiety at us, but we love music and the sound of big heavy book pages turning and rainfall.
And so, like. Please imagine Eddie Brock turning on actual ASMR videos so Venom can enjoy the little spine tingle from sounds. Imagine him putting on white noise like rainymood or one of those 8+ hours of waves lapping or a creaking boat or something.
Imagine the first time Eddie hums.
why are my friends like this
I am gonna have to agree with @zainclaw, you should DEFINITELY do the thing :D
Ked. Listen. Just imagine.
The first time Eddie starts humming a melody, not even realizing he’s doing it. Is it in the shower? Is it while hunched over his desk working on his next interview? Is it when cooking putting some more nuggets in the oven? Doesn’t matter. But what matters is that Venom goes perfectly silent, listening to the soft noise coming out of Eddie, before wondering “what is that sound?” to which Eddie pauses and asks “what? humming?” and Venom stays quiet for a moment before saying “do it again”.
They aren’t, Eddie realizes, just listening to the sounds. They’re feeling them. Venom is, for lack of a better understanding on Eddie’s part, made of an alien fluid. Eddie’s seen the way sound waves interact with fluid. He’s seen magnets - like the giant magnet in the MRI - turn ferrofluid into spikes. He knows outside forces can have an effect on fluids that is unexpected. Beautiful even.
Venom does not like loud noises. They do not like certain frequencies, and Eddie can understand why. He has seen what those sounds can do to Venom. He knows that certain ones can pull them apart, and he hates those ones, too.
But there’s a certain sort of satisfaction that radiates from Venom when Eddie hums, low and soft. Venom goes quiet and still and Eddie can feel them in his throat, under his skin, behind his teeth, soaking up the gentle vibration of the notes Eddie hums. It reminds him of the rare moments Anne’s cat would push under his open palm and beg to be pet.
So he hums. He hums, and Venom coils under his skin like a great big cat, warm and comforting and happy, and Eddie realizes that, for the first time in a long time, he is happy, too.
#whispers#don’t stop there (via @zainclaw)
I’m a sucker for you.
——
It starts with humming, but that is not where it ends.
Eddie pulls music from a variety of sources after that. Venom listens to them in a set of ratty headphones that spit out quality music- classical and jazz and rock and country and blues. They listen to EDM for only a few seconds and Venom recedes for an hour and Eddie never tries it again. Eddie patiently teaches Venom a camp song he learned as a child, and offers Venom his vocal cords to sing it aloud and the ensuing burst of energy feels like someone set an entire night’s worth of fireworks off inside his mind.
On a day off, Eddie drives them out to a musical instruments store and he absolutely doesn’t wonder whether Venom appreciates the rumble of the motorbike between their thighs. He finds a piano at the back of the store, one that faces away from the rest of the floor, one with the lid raised in a way that blocks him from view, and he lays his fingers on the pale keys. He’s never played piano in his life, but he plucks keys across all the ranges and Venom reaches out from his chest to touch the wood and the wires and reaches into Eddie’s fingers to feel the smooth keys depress beneath their shared whim. They pluck at guitar strings together, and Venom straightens a triangle into a pole after the first note.
He drives to the park in the middle of a thunderstorm and lets the rain patter over his skin and when the lightning cracks across the sky, he warns Venom about what comes next. Eddie’s skin shivers when the boom of thunder rumbles through them, on the cusp of pain without crossing over it. The sheer volume leaves Eddie gasping for his next breath and Venom clinging ten times tighter to him after the way the thunder trembled their true form.
Eddie knows why, but he made sure before he came here. Thunder can’t separate them, he knows that. He made sure.
“Don’t worry,” he says, arms up as rain drenches them, soaking his clothing and dripping cold down the curve of his neck. Maybe someday he’ll be able to reach for Venom inside without closing his eyes, but for now he does, and feels the press of Venom against his mind in return. I’m still yours. I choose you.
You have no choice, Eddie, Venom reminds him softly.
I don’t need one, he thinks back with no amount of reservation.
He’d wanted a choice, once upon a time. He had wanted one right up until it had been given to him and he realized there was no choice, but not for the reasons Venom thought. Riot had ripped Venom away from him, and in that moment, Eddie had chosen. Eddie had reached for Venom.
Eddie will always reach for them.
“I don’t want to have to make that choice again, you know?” Eddie says.
I won’t leave you either, Venom tells him, which is exactly what Eddie wants to hear. You’re mine.
On their way home, Eddie starts to hum.
