Please help Fatima care for her infant daughter and siblings in Gaza. Most infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed, so Fatima and her family live in a tent. The winter is cold and rainy and can become deadly fast. Food is often expensive when it is available at all.

The war on drugs is rooted in racist policies . The failure of the war and drugs is obvious. We need to find a better solution, because people of color should never be the victims of racist policies. White Americans are more likely than black Americans to have used most kinds of illegal drugs, including cocaine and LSD. Yet blacks are far more likely to go to prison for marijuana, which is not a hard drug. Moreover , even when white people get caught , they get less time in prison.

I reblogged her late last year and my 2024 has been very satisfying work-wise and (secure enough to not stress out) money-wise so far. Money Snake is wise and good.

So, to make sure her family wouldn’t stop her final wishes from being enacted, I haven’t been able to talk about this publicly, but now I can:

On March 1, @rubynye (aka Ny Martin) collapsed in her kitchen due to sudden cardiac arrest. She was declared brain dead and passed on March 3. She was 50 years old.

Ny was a singularly talented person. She was not only a gifted writer, singer, poet, chef and artist, she had the ability to make you feel like the most important person in the world just by smiling at you.

I first encountered her in 2009, on the Star Trek XI kinkmeme on LJ. I was in AWE of her wordsmithery. She could so carefully identify and communicate moments that I was intimidated by her immediately. I didn’t know she even knew who I was until she used my head canon in a story. I was gobsmacked.

She would tell you she felt the same way about me, but I always felt like I was honored to call her my friend.

I feel like it’s important to say that Ny was a fan of color, and as a Black Woman often faced down things in fandom that were dehumanizing, demoralizing, or just enraging. I learned how to be a better antiracist from her, how to be a better friend, and how to be a better creator in a fandom with non-white characters. She was sometimes rightfully, righteously furious, and she taught me how to sit with her in those moments without trying to fix them. I always felt honored to have earned that trust.

Ny loved so much. She adored children, and would often ask after my nibblings. She cooked for everyone, and it was common for her to just…mail people food. Here, rainbow fudge. Here, hemp butter. Here, a Jamaican fruitcake. When she came to visit me years ago, she insisted on cooking for me before she left, so I’d have dinners she made. She loved sending people things, both in her millions of bcced emails and in the mail. I have so many postcards of things she saw that made her think of me. She loved mythology, especially Minoans, and she loved space. She loved so much.

One time she printed out a story I wrote and hand annotated it with glee before mailing it to me. It’s one of the most thoughtful things anyone has ever given me.

I could always ask her anything, be it a question about a Black character’s hair or a question about quince jam. I could tell her any crazy idea I had and she would gleefully play in the space.

Long time readers might not know, but it may be obvious in retrospect; when I needed to give Sam Wilson a little sister in Struggle in the Architecture, I named her Ruby in honor of Ny.

Her queue is still going here, and I think many of us are dreading the day it runs out.

lemonsharks and I want to put together a fanzine dedicated to Ny. We decided it should be called BWEE! The Book of Ny.

To that end, I set up a discord server to collect stories, poems, recipues, artwork, memories, and messages in a bottle that we wish we could send on to her as we find things that make us think of her, and we think would make her smile or laugh.

True horrors wake people up in the past and in the present. I feel like one of the only recourses a lot of people have is to share accounts and footage of ICE atrocities to as many people as possible.

This quote leaves out that Boston citizens rioted over Anthony Burns, repeatedly tried to break him out of jail and interrupt the trial, even killing one of the men guarding him. They also protested peacefully, attempted to purchase Burns’s freedom, offered him free legal counsel, and petitioned the mayor not to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. When Burns was finally taken aboard ship, they followed along with a coffin to symbolize his freedom dying.

The president called in the US Marines and the state militia (in addition to the US Marshalls who arrested him and held him in jail) to allow this one man to be dragged back to slavery.

There’s more, which you can see on Burn’s Wikipedia and on the Committee of Vigilance’s page, the abolitionist group founded after the Fugitive Slave Act to protect and aid Boston’s large community of escaped slaves & black citizen.

Help Ahmad Get Treatment and Surgery to Repair Serious Complication!

While Saja's husband Ahmad has been recovering from his recent surgery, he experienced a serious complication.

Saja contacted me recently to tell me that Ahmad has been taken to the hospital because of a urinary catheter that caused a wound to his bladder. He didn't notice because he has no feeling in his lower body. He lost a lot of blood and some people donated blood so he could regain consciousness. Now he needs bladder surgery. I have asked Saja for more details about the surgery and will add any I get. Please donate and share to help him out!

Also yesterday (Nov 8, 2025) Ahmad contacted me to ask for help for food and other necessities for his children and to cover the treatment he needs. He has told me that his treatment expenses for his bladder are about $350 per week. He also said he will need surgery for his bladder. Please help Ahmad and his family by donating and reblogging!
