zukka “el chico del apartamento 512” au
aka au where sokka and zuko live in the same apartment complex and zuko has this MASSIVE crush on sokka, who he only knows as “the guy in apartment 512.” some people in the complex, like this asshole Jet, come up to zuko to flirt all the time, but he’s not interested. if its not the guy with the ponytail and the muscle tops and the stupidly pretty grin, he does not care.
its especially embarrassing for zuko bc him and his crush have never interacted before despite having lived in the same building for almost a year, mostly bc… well… zuko isn’t the type to really socialize unless he has to. that, and he’s pathetically shy when it comes to talking to people he’s romantically interested in.
anyway. he’s been secretly writing notes to sokka expressing the feelings he’s harbored for him over the last several months, but he never actually follows through with sending any of them, or slipping them underneath his door. most end up in the trash, crumpled up into balls, but some are still scribbled on the pages at the back of an old notebook, just in case.
one day, zuko decides he just… he has to say something. he’s been pining for months over this dude who he knows almost nothing about–not even his name–and its honestly getting depressing. so he gathers all his courage and, instead of heading straight into his apartment after getting back from work one Wednesday evening, he continues down the hall to apartment 512. he knocks on the door, heart beating faster and faster as the seconds drag on, and then it opens. and the face that greets him is not one he expected to find.
a pretty girl opens the door. her skin is brown, like her hair, but her eyes are bright and blue. she almost reminds him of sokka. but with zuko, who is a known oblivious idiot, his first instinct is to assume that this must be sokka’s girlfriend, and his heart shatters. because, well, what other explanation is there? why else would she be there, right? they’re both drop-dead gorgeous, so if they were together, it would make sense…
even as she stares at him, concerned and probably a little unsettled by his silence and the fact that he hasn’t responded to her “hi! do you need something?”, zuko cant seem to find his voice, and he’s pretty sure his face is bright red at this point–he can definitely feel the heat spreading across his cheeks. the girl seems to catch on to what he wants, though, somehow, (Zuko suspects she’s a mind-reader of sorts,) because her lips twist into a grin and she says, “oh, i see… you’re looking for my brother, aren’t you?”
brother? her… brother? they’re siblings? oh my god they’re siblings.
before he knows it, the girl disappears into the apartment and he’s left standing there, frozen, not knowing if this was his cue to leave. but then, moments later, he appears. the guy from apartment 512, in all his toned, ridiculously tall and gorgeous glory, with his stupid smile and sparkling blue eyes.
and zuko doesn’t know how he does it–how he manages to ask his long-time crush on a date to a “great tea shop” he knows. it all went by so fast that he can hardly remember what he said exactly, or what sokka said other than “yes.” but he did it and he feels ten times lighter than he has in months. and now he has the pretty boy’s name and number in his phone and a date on Friday and he just can’t stop grinning. and when he hears a loud “YES!!” coming from behind the now closed door to apartment 512, he knows he’s not the only one with a smile on his face.
