Example of good video game writing in Scarlet Hollow: the sticker on Kaneeka's laptop. I noticed it in Chapter 2, but others may have gotten to see it as early as the end of Chapter 1. If you don’t know anime, all you see is a cute anime critter, possibly a pokemon. If you do know anime, you’ll recognise Kyubey from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a dark and bloody deconstruction of magical girl stories. Knowing more about her taste in anime is a poignant piece of characterisation for Kaneeka, a goth anime nerd stuck in a small dead-end mining town. But then I got to Chapter 5 and found out what Kaneeka's actual situation is, and where her plotline has been going all along, and that sticker turned out to be the biggest, bleakest piece of foreshadowing in a game full of big, bleak foreshadowings.

It’s interesting to me how people will separate Slay The Princess into a love story about relationships and a philosophical, existential story about the question of change and life and death. Because I think one of the main points that the “love story” posits is how conflict is necessary for love in any capacity— not hatred, necessarily, but change, separation, conflicting goals. You cannot stay in the cabin forever.

black tabby games truly outdid themselves with writing avery and julius because so many people stumble into the trap treating these two characters exactly the same as the rest of scarlet hollow treats them over and over and over again.

i also see a lot of people doing what is essentially the equivalent of giving avery succulents with regards to their character. going off a vibe they get from them, but not actually listening to the things they say. it's so interesting.

the thing about stella is its like "why is she so stupid why does she keep putting herself in crazy dangerous situations and why is she ALWAYS FILMING" and then you get to episode 4 and its like she lost her parents at a relatively young age, has coped with none of that, her desire to find cryptids is half desire to find her parents ghosts and half suicidal ideation, and she has a huge grief-related gap in her memory that probably explains why she might trust a camera more than she trusts her own mind. and its like oh fuck the saddest girl in the world is a clickbait youtuber
