“what is fun?”
Did your parents ever accidentally lose or forget you?
“there was one time i think. my sister and i ran off when our dad wasn’t looking on a trip to the mall, in search of candy or lip gloss or stuffed animals or something. probably because we were always trying to escape our mom on outings but never could between her hawk eyes and death grip. we didn’t make it too far before he realized it. still, my mom found out about it somehow and practically eviscerated him for being so careless, when really it was just mckenna’s scheming mind and my willingness to go along with it. oops.”

trevhanson:
This was his element. Trevor had slipped out of the suit that he’d worn for the gala and was now in something a little more comfortable— or rather, something that suited him a little more. A silk shirt careened down his shoulders, half buttoned and in an obnoxious pattern, his jeans were black and skinny. He kept the sneakers on from the event, the whole look ending with the sharp cut of red that made up the back of them. Already he weaved through the party, greeting those that he knew, (the Gerbers had made it and he gave them both a hug— despite the fact that Presley was a prick, Willow Barrett had managed to scrape together the money for an Uber and he’d brought a handful of Belgian boys from his management as well) and introducing himself to those that he did not. Trev cradled a glass in hand, the cocktail had a fun name, Rodeo Drive 75, and he sipped it as he picked his way through the backyard. This time, he’d brought his juul and its presence burned a hole in his back pocket, just begging to be used. Finding a spot, he sat on a lounge chair, glancing over at his neighbour for a moment. “You mind if I vape?”
sprawled out over of the lounge chairs, bridget’s kept to herself as other party guests mingled around her. excess black eyeliner smudged underneath her eyes and her hair now tied up messily in a bun at the crown of her head, it was clear that the act of keeping up appearances—or rather deliberately trying not to keep up appearances—at the event had exhausted her. her lips were sealed in a pout as she raised her flask up to them, taking a large enough gulf to burn her throat as goosebumps covered her arms from a gust of the night wind blew by. the light pink mini dress she’d changed into not keeping her nearly as warm as the gown she’d had on earlier. as her eyes moved from the sky, which shone no stars in sight, to whoever had decided to sit next to her, bridget smirked when she saw who it was. “mind if i smoke?” she teased as she reached for a stray cigarette in her bag. “some party you’ve got going on here.”

In any event where Elaine was expected to be ritualistically paired off with someone for propriety’s sake, Percy Hollingsworth was called in. Law student at Harvard, university rowing champion from his time at Cambridge, and compulsive naysayer, Percy was the son of Anna Maria Spaulding’s closest friend in London. And over the past four years, he had become Elaine’s stand-in, the required second half of a well-to-do couple. Her parents spoke about them with an archaic air, as if he were Elaine’s betrothed or something equally ridiculous. The thought made her stomach turn over; she didn’t think they had ever done anything beyond shake hands. But still, she had a recurrent nightmare of herself waking up, ten years older, with Percy’s freckled, ruddy face staring at her from across her pillows, calling her something repulsive like sweetums. She felt a shiver down her spine as his hand cupped her elbow, her mouth twisting in unfounded annoyance when he asked where the restrooms where. “I’m hardly omniscient. Try asking one of the staff,” she replied, short and impatient. He merely grumbled and ambled away, leaving Elaine alone by a table showcasing all the information about some relic of a car Percy had submitted his name and bid for. Movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention, a flash of blonde hair. Her gaze darted over and—“Oh,” Elaine exhaled dumbly, then straightened her spine. She glanced at the picture of the old Ferrari, then back at Bridget. “You haven’t taken up antique car collecting, have you?”
bridget’s face wore its usual blank, lifeless stare as she surveyed the shiny items up for auction that night. her dress, sheer and practically hanging off her body, flowed behind her as she walked slowly focusing on each item for a lot longer than someone who wasn’t going to be bidding on anything should have. abstract art pieces, flashy sports cars, all-inclusive resort vacations. none of it was much of interest to her, but then again what did these days? she was merely buying time, avoiding her mother who was around her somewhere face most likely still pinched in a tired expression over the fact that her daughter had decided to go stag to an event that said dates were highly encouraged. what was this? cotillion? she had been there and done that one too many times. and avoiding her sister, who she still couldn’t think of much to say to now that she had been back. and well, lots of other people too. old friends, old flames, old acquaintances. she wished to avoid them all, because her capacity for small talk was diminishing by the day. yet, here she was still setting herself up for the inevitable misery. still, far too confused about what she wanted to do anything else. a feathery sigh leaves her lips as she approaches another table showcasing yet another car. it was cool, she guessed. but so were the other five she pretended to read about earlier. she was about to shrug it off and walk to the next table when a familiar voice catches her by surprise. “me? no. could write down my stepdad’s name for shits and giggles. but no.” she cranes her neck over her shoulder as if to look for the man in question but really just to avoid elaine’s gaze for as long as she could before turning back. nose scrunching as she catches the sight of percy hollingsworth pushing past the crowd behind them, knowing elaine’s arrangement with him all too well. “still stuck with hollingsworth, huh? you know there’s major power in the word no, elaine. you should try it sometime.”

nicholascvldwell:
it was a beacon of light in the dark of the party, bridget, although, like the moon, it dimmed at certain times, darker, possibly far too dark, almost hidden. he knew she could sense his presence, how he didn’t bother to carry himself any lighter than he normally did ── and that was it: nicholas caldwell had always had quite the presence about him, and he knew that, reveled in it, kept it clenched between palms as if it was the only thing he truly did have, maybe. he met her against the balcony, not bothering to glance over towards her, nonchalant, as his hand reached into the pocket of his jacket to pull out the flask: aged whiskey he had ordered from india a week back, dropping far too much money. “it’s god. he’s got all the power he’d ever want at his finger tips. he likes playing with his toys. wouldn’t you, if you had all that power?” he mused back dryly, as brown eyes peered over the balcony towards the floor, where people huddled and some made out intimately. “only option is up. i’ll build that staircase to heaven myself and drag the damn bastard off of his golden throne,” he spoke truthfully, thinking what a life he’d have, maybe, if he had it all. “he’s simply warming up my seat.”
a scoff left her lips followed by the rare hint of a smile that he could’ve only seen if he was paying close enough attention. an expression just for the way he talked. for the way he was. she hated it, or at least that’s what she told herself, yet she couldn’t seem to pull herself away. this nagging feeling pulling her in two different directions, sooner or later she knew she’d be too tired or numb to care about which way she ended up. “maybe,” she mused softly before taking another drag, still avoiding his gaze as if she had to think on such a question. what would she do with power? that thing she felt she didn’t have for years, or maybe ever. would she do something? or would she just stand there with her hands tied? she didn’t know. “to those who deserved it.” and there was a long list of people who did in her mind, but a lot of times she was all bark and no bite. tapping the excess ashes off her cigarette so that they fell over the balcony, it’s cherry burned brightly between them as she turned sharply in his direction. a cool breeze sent goosebumps trailing up her bare arms as she finally met his eyes, then eyeing his flask she reached out to grab it and took a sip. instead of giving it back, she held it hostage close to her chest just because she knew it’d probably annoy him. “oh is that so? didn’t realize you had such high aspirations.” eyes falling to the floor as she made a face, she bit into her bottom lip to try and hold her laugh. “well, if things work out for you up there, don’t expect me to get down on my knees for you.”
eliasmorrissey:
Drifting to the alcohol aisle made him reminisce, first of the time when he was sixteen, and he tried buying beer, no ID, just his words, and then to a few years later, his more successful attempt with a fake–– one that would be cut in half at a bar in Miami six months later by a four-hundred-pound bouncer named Benny. Idling, he was munching on an opened bag of chips, ones he had yet to pay for, only noticing the other as she spoke, and once he got a look at her he felt dumb for ever even not noticing her. He smiled, swiveled on his feet and leaned against the glass door, keeping his chips close to his chest. There was something familiar about her, perhaps and fellow high school pupil, “You need a better place to hang out then. Sooner rather than later. Once the cashier knows you by heart there’s no turning back,” His smirk lightened; rose like embers from a flame, while his eyes drifted down her, the hand with the chips gesturing out towards her frame, “–In the hoodie, out of the hoodie, doesn’t matter, either way, you’d still have people turning their heads,” The blonde slid closer, reaching for a handle to one of the cold, glass doors, opening it to take his pick from the selection of light beers, “While we’re on the topic, what is your name?” He nodded his head down, brought his occupied hand closer to his chest, “–Mine’s Elias.”
“oh him?” bridget looked over her shoulder in the direction of the cashier. her brows furrowing as she watched him, too into whatever was happening on his phone to even realize he had a customer waiting in line to check out. the faint noise of some video game able to be heard if one was paying close enough attention. “you think he’s got it in him? i don’t know, looks pretty harmless to me. but what do i know?” she shrugged, giving the guy one last look before turning her attention back to the selection of alcohol to grab another bottle. a laugh falling loosely from her lips at the sound of his compliment. “you, on the other hand,” she started as she turned to face him, green eyes taking him in. his features even more striking now that she was getting a good look at him. “seem a lot more dangerous.” nodding her head, she took a step closer. her face fighting a smile as her pointer finger began to etch a shape into the fogged glass door wedged between them. only teasing, or was she? “but like i said what do i know?”
blalrs:
she hears her long before she sees her, bridget’s voice rising high above the pounding bass, cutting through the sinuous beat. she catches her friend’s blonde hair just as she sinks down to the floor, her fingers grasping and reaching for her lost belongings. pushing through a passing herd of gossiping girls, blair reaches the blonde just in time to catch a run away tube of mascara before it rolls past her and is lost to the sea of party goers. “so much for chivalry, right? you’d almost think all those fairytale books lied to us.” she teased, her mouth tipped up in a small grin. “here. just barely managed to save this.” she holds out the black tube like a lone dior flower, just waiting for bridget to claim. it’s not much of a peace offering, but in the circumstances it will do. but it’s here standing in front of her, even with the hinderance of the blanket of dim mood lighting, that blair can make out her eyes. bridget’s pupils are blown almost comically wide, the green of her irises all but consumed by black. she’s on something. cocaine if she had to hazard a guess. a rush of grief - of longing and loss for the girls they once were, for the unshakable bond she never imaged could be severed - surges through her at the sight of her best friend. she takes a step closer, her hand coming to rest on bridget’s slender shoulder. “wanna get out of here?”
“tell me about it. i guess what they say is true. chivalry really is dead.” for a split second, things seem normal between them again. like nothing had happened, and they were back to their old ways of teasing and make semi-bad decisions. the way things were before bridget took things a little too far. before she’d gotten to be too much to deal with. but the moment was gone too quickly, and she felt the need to tear her eyes away immediately as if she couldn’t stand her old friend seeing her like this. broken and sharp at the edges. so bridget looked over her shoulder in an attempt to shoot the guy another look, but it was no use as he was already long gone and blair was still there with no ability to avoid her now. tousling her hair to one side, she turns back around as her eyes fall to the tube of mascara being held out in front of her. a small smile twists at her lips as she grabs it back quickly, hating that the tension between them seemed to be overshadowing any feeling of gratitude for the recovered item. “oh thanks. would’ve been upset about losing that one for sure.” she mused somewhat awkwardly before nestling the tube back into her bag. her eyes growing a bit wide as blair stepped closer to her on account of paranoia from the drugs probably. “with you? oh, um, i don’t want to drag you out of here if you’re not ready to leave... but if you want to, then sure i guess.”
trevhanson:
Trev was in search of a very specific sort of organic dog treat– but with CVS being the only place within thirty miles that was open still, it wasn’t likely that he’d be finding it. Dark brows furrowed as he glanced between his phone and the selection before he gave up, seeking out the alcohol aisle instead. Whatever they had at home would have to do, Chowder was, after all, just a dog. Now, he sought out a bottle of acetone, his own black nail polish was heading past worn in and into grubby territory. He’d painted them on a whim, but ended up liking it, maintaining the look when he felt inclined. It was a voice that made him turn, grinning wide. “Hey.” He plucked one of the clear bottles from the shelf, throttling it while he spoke. “I’ve got one in every colour, I think the pink and yellow one really brings out my eyes.” Trev’s chin tilted in the direction of the t-shirts. “Wanna get matching ones, whenever Halliday hosts his next party I wanna look the part. Felt a lil underdressed last time.”
“hey yourself,” bridget teased, smirking as she eyed him out the corner of her eye while she dropped two bottles into her basket. “long time no see. you recover okay post halliday extravaganza?” she asked as she moved closer to him. “oh i’m sure the yellow looks amazing with your complexion, and the pink? what a great contrast from your hair.” she placed a hand on her chest for extra emphasis as she went on. “only if we get the matching bucket hats to complete our look.” a laugh left her lips as she glanced over at the rack of clothing and then back at trev. “oh right, i forgot you didn’t get the neon colored speedo memo. i think we all need to step up our game after that one.”
