she laughed at what the male had to say “I really appreciate the offer” she said with a warm smile and a nod. “aww, clara you are the best” she said smiling at the small girl in the room. she hadn’t really thought about arrangements, but quite honestly with everything going on it was the last thing on her mind. “you really don’t have to do all that” she said with a laugh “I mean dropping by to make sure all is well would be nice, but it’s not necessary. you are too kind” she smiled softly. “wait what?!” she girl replied in a loud whisper, keeping in mind the fact there was a child just steps away. “that’s so exciting, oh my gosh” she smiled “congrats to you both!”

“You’re my sister-in-law. And I know Lottie will be bored out of her mind, so having company will make it easier for her to deal with.” He still hadn’t heard anything about her surgery, so he just had to hope for the best. He smiled. “The kids worked up an elaborate plan to have us go out on Valentine’s day, and it was….really good and not great. Lottie had me come over a few days later to work on her patio furniture, and we had a big blow up that got everything out in the open and we made up. She ripped up the divorce papers and handed me the sheet that she hadn’t signed and I burned it. We’ve been keeping it quiet and working things out and making sure everything’s okay before telling anyone. We were meeting up for a date and I was going to bring up how we think we’re doing so we could talk about when we were going to tell people and when we would consider sharing a home again.”

Don’t Take The Girl

She bit her lip at the cheesy speech he was about to give. But relaxed when he didn’t finish. “Jared Dean!” Charlotte gave her kids a pointed look, “Point is… You dad and I just wanted to take things slow for the benefit of the family. We didn’t want to rush things or get hopes up, okay? Like you dad said, we’re still… Figuring a lot out.” She admits. “But go home. Get some rest, alright? Come visit tomorrow, after school. If you think you’re missing a single day you’re all sorely mistaken.” Charlotte teases before giving all her kids a final hug and kisses, sending them home for the night. 

Charlotte falls against the pillows and closes her eyes for a second. When she opens them her leg is still in its cast. So it wasn’t a dream.

“It’s not your fault you know.” She says, looking over at Bryan. “I know you well enough to sense that you probably blamed yourself. What if I picked her up? Planned a later date? You can’t think like that, it’ll eat you up.”

 “You sure you’re going to be able to take care of us?” She winces at the slight movement of her leg. “I don’t think we’re going to be particularly much fun the next few months… I know sex is probably off the table.” Charlotte chuckles, trying to lighten the mood, “Can’t do too much rigorous activity, ya know.”

“I’ll come back with your stuff in a little while.” JD said before leaving to take his sisters home. “Wait,” Bryan gave him a twenty. “Order some pizza for dinner. I’ll be home later.” He went back to sit next to Lottie and hold her hand. He looked up at her, a little surprised that she hit the nail on the head, but  of course she did. He nodded and swallowed hard. “Okay.” Bryan glanced up at her, concerned as she moved, his brows crinkled. “You would make that joke.”  He kissed her knuckles. “But, this is what I signed up for, right? For better or worse, in sickness and health? I told you every time you were pregnant and every time you were recovering. If you need me to help wipe your ass, that’s what I’m here for.” He smiled. “Though, I told Sawyer we’ll have to hire a nurse or something for her because I’m sure she wouldn’t want her brother-in-law doing that.”

“Shit. I’m sorry”, Declan said with a shake of his head. His nose wrinkled up for a moment. He felt even more selfish for feeling lucky his kids had been at home with grandma. Some of his friends were injured, but nothing was fatal and all his family members weren’t even there. He had stopped by to get his heart checked out, but even that was a pre-existing condition. “Man, you need any help with anything, just ask. I’ll go get your mail and water your plants and bring you clean clothes.”

He smiled  softly. “I appreciate that.” He chuckled. “I think we’ve got it covered between myself and my two older kids.” He took a deep breath. “Things are going to be rough for a while, but we’ll make it through together.”

“The girls are 16 and 8.” He said, offering a smile. “And, honestly, it’s been mostly their mom, at least over the past almost five years. We’ve been separated and recently began trying to work things out.”

“A broken pelvis…” Lottie feels the armors in her body start again, closing her eyes as awake of nausea rode through her. But she had to be strong for her kids. 

“They are top notch.” She agreed. At the thought getting her kids a chance to go home, Charlotte concocted a long list. “Clothes. Clothes would be great.  Water spray and sponge. It’ll help cool me down.  Comfortable pillows. These are making my back ache and if you can get my favorite ones, Clara knows which. Maybe my tablet? The entertainment here sucks. Oh! My eye mask and earplugs to help me get an actual good night’s rest. An––”

“Woah, woah, woah.” JD stands up as he holds his up. Everyone’s eyes fall on their eldest. 

“Is no one going to talk about that?” He points at his father, “Sure, it took a second to process but dad literally just kissed mom. And non one is going to say anything?”

Busted.

“God, I forgot how high maintenance you are some times.” he teased with a look of pure adoration on his face. He turned to look at their son and cocked his head, confused. “You’re acting like that’s a bad thing? You’ll understand when you’re older. Sometimes, there are things that transcend the little things that you might have worried about before, and you realize you’d do anything to - yeah okay, you caught us.” He sighed, dropping the powerful speech he’d started. He shrugged and cringed a little as he looked to Lottie before smiling shyly.  “Oops.”  

Clara squealed with delight and ran over to her dad & wrapped her arms around him. “Does that mean you’re coming home?” He smoothed her hair down and kissed the top of her head. “We’re still figuring stuff out, but if you think for a second that I’m not going to be taking care of your mom every second until she’s better, you’re crazy.” he looked up to Lottie. “Oh, by the way, I invited, or well, more like forced Sawyer to agree to move in until she’s on the mend so you two can have some company and be taken care of at the same time.” He looked to Lily and JD “And I expect you both to pitch in.”

“How long has this been going on?” Lily asked, suspicious. Bryan looked over at Lottie. “Why didn’t you guys tell us?!” JD asked, exasperated. The older two looked at each other at a loss. They were happy, yes, but still confused. “Four fuuuucking years we’ve been trying to get you two back together.” JD said, his cadence similar to the way Bryan speaks. He shot a glance at him for cursing - it’s not like he could really discipline him since he himself cursed often enough and JD was legally an adult now. Getting upset with him over the word fuck felt trite. “What took you two so long!”

Cooper nodded “ You’re welcome, if you need someone to keep an eye on them for a moment I’d be happy to, it would stop me from walking around this hospital to find people myself  I have never liked hospital waiting rooms”

“I really appreciate it. Our son’s 18, so I’ve kinda forced him to step up and watch his sisters, and they’ve been in to visit their aunt for a bit, so I think they’re okay for now.”

Declan felt so lucky his kids weren’t at the hospital. His daughter’s first birthday was just last Saturday, his parents were still over and staying with him. His mom was watching his kids, thank god they were both at home - and had been during the whole event. He felt so lucky and incredibly selfish at the same time, because not everyone could think like that. Someone’s kids were in there right now.

“I wish I could smoke”, he said with a chuckle. “I have a heart condition, they’re just checking some things out”, Declan added with a shrug. It didn’t really have anything to do with the crash, it was just an unfortunate turn of events. Stress wasn’t good for his heart. “You holding up okay? I’m a hard liquor kind of a guy, don’t get me wrong.”

He shook his head. “Just barely. My wife and sister-in-law were in the accident. Both are pretty fucked up, but at least I know her sister will survive her injuries. I’m holding out hope because I really can’t begin to think about the alternatives, but it’s pretty dire. It’s never easy when someone hands you documents that outline decisions you have to make now in case they die.”

“Not really, no. I won’t be better until I know my wife’s alive.” He continued taking deep breaths. “She’s in surgery now.”

sawyer’s heart was heavy hearing the news of her sister. she couldn’t believe how bad this whole thing was. “please keep me updated, right away please” she said softly, a worrisome tone in her voice. “yes please, have her call as soon as she is able” she added in. “oh gosh I didn’t even thing of that” she said. arrangements and care were something she never even began to think of. “I’m not sure if they’ve been contacted, can you please give them a call?” she asked. “I’ll have to think of the housing situation. I hate to leave my new house.” she nodded “and I would hate to put all of that on you as well” she added.

Bryan nodded along to everything she said until the end. “No. You’re family, no matter what happens between Lottie and I, you’re still family and you’re allowed to burden us when you’re in need. It’s law.” he cracked a small smile. Clara nodded, too. “You’ve got us! I’ll keep you company every day when I come home from school.” Bryan smiled at the little girl, a perfect mix of his and Lottie’s features. “Between the four of us, we’ll have this handled. You can take JD’s room and he can stay in his room at my house, or on the couch. We’ll get it handled. And if you need one of us to check on your place, we can do that too. Remember, I don’t exactly have a normal 9-5 office job, I work from home and choose my shoots, so I can stay there with you both all day. We’ll just have to figure out mobility and bathroom things, since I’m sure you don’t want your brother-in-law helping you bathe or sit on the toilet.” Clara looked up at him. “Daddy, I now that you mention it…” He pointed to a door in the room. “That’s the bathroom.” Clara shuffled off to take care of business. Once the door was shut, he came closer to Sawyer to make sure Clara couldn’t hear. “Also, I don’t know how much Lottie’s told you, but we’ve been working on getting back together…actually, we’ve sorta been a couple again for a month, but we haven’t told anyone because we’re making sure things get fixed and don’t rush.”

Axel could thank his unpunctuality for not being a patient at the hospital that day. He had been waiting for a few hours after receiving his best friend’s call, the doctors had told him he was fine but need it to wait for some test results and the discharge documents. Not being able to handle the chaos inside the hospital, he decided to go outside and take some fresh air. He was checking his phone when someone started talking to him. “It is ironic but understandable,” he said, before reaching to his pocket to get the cigarette package, offering him one. “Yeah, my best friend. He’s okay, just a pulled muscle,” Axel explained with a shrug. “What about you?”

He shook his head, declining the cigarette. “I quit when my wife was pregnant with our first.” He took a breath and let it out. “Yeah…my wife’s in surgery…life threatening slice to her femoral artery. Her sister’s got a broken pelvis.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “So, we’re just waiting to see how she is…”

Putting his hand on the man’s shoulder Cooper gave him a sympathetic smile. “ I hope everything goes well in her surgery and that she makes a full recovery.” He replied feeling for him.  “ I hope she makes a full recovery as well then. I think there was a drunk driver but I don’t know much more than that”

Bryan clasped his hand over the other man’s. He whispered a thank you. “I’ve got our kids here, so we’re hanging in together. And I’ve been in contact with her parents, so…it’s a waiting game now.”

thoren was at the hospital waiting to hear news about his sister. he was worried sick about her, but he was also grateful that his son and brother were both alright. gray was safe at a friend’s house, which he was grateful for. seated in the waiting room, he glances over at the man rambling beside him, brows raising slightly. he wasn’t really in the mood for conversation. “i think you need to take a breath.” he mutters, shaking his head. “i am, yeah.” 

“Yeah…yeah…” He nodded, taking a breath and gripping the back of the bench in front of him as he tried to control his breathing. The thought of losing his wife was something he never had to think about before, and he was beginning to understand the fear that drove her towards their split.

Even despite the life he’d lived, his job and the kind of things he’d seen…tragedy still unnerved him. He chalked it up to being human, to just another symptom of the condition…but even so, the awkwardness radiating through him didn’t go away. He needed air, and he needed it fast, so he stood outside. Away from the crying and the screaming and beeping and reminders that this was a hospital, and that people were in pain. “Huh?” Iggy looked up, glancing over at the man. “You know…I always keep a flask on me if you want…” Iggy took the small steel bottle from his pocket and held it out. “Yeah, I am….” he frowned, “I–how are you not just falling apart right now?”

“I fell apart earlier. My kids are here, so I have to keep a little together to keep them calm and occupied until we find out how their mom’s doing. I’m looking out for my sister-in-law, too, so believe me, i’m barely holding on. I just..I have to.” He took the flask from the stranger and took a swig to take the edge of the day off. “Thanks.”

“aww claire bear” she said, looking over at the girl “i love you bunches” she said, doing her best to form a smile through the pain. “is it supposed to be a quick procedure?” she asked bryan “do they think everything will go smoothly?” she proceeded to ask. “just trying to hang in there with this pain” she said with a nod “unfortunately a broken pelvis is what I was cursed with”

“I don’t know…” He said, clearly trying to hold it together. “Her femoral artery was cut…that’s the main one from the heart down the leg. It’s pretty serious.” Clara went over to her aunt to hold her hand. When she said what happened to her, Bryan cursed. “I’m so sorry…” He had no idea how long it would take to heal, but it would at best be a major set back to her dancing career, if not destroy it all together. “As soon as she’s out, I’ll send JD to come tell you, and I’ll give her your room number so she can call.” He didn’t know if Lottie had told her they’d begun the process of working things out a month ago, after four years apart, but he hoped Sawyer knew how much Lottie meant to him. And by extension, her as well. “I haven’t called your parents yet because I wanted to check in on you first, and I didn’t know if they’d been contacted already. You should move into Lottie’s place while you recover, and I’ll take care of you both and the kids. I’m not taking no for an answer.”

Cooper had been working on cleaning up his house when everything kicked off, he was meant to have been working later that day but of course, that wasn’t to be the case now. Cooper sat there waiting on news about people he cared about, he had heard from some of his friends but had come here to wait on any news of anyone else he cared about, he found himself hoping that no one he cared about was Severely injured. Looking up at Bryan he smiled.  “ Know the feeling,  but for me, I tend to cook in situations like this, and that’s just what I would be doing if I hadn’t come here,” he replied looking at him.  “ I am waiting to hear on a few people I just hope that no one got too severely hurt.” He replied as he looked up and him with a half smile. Cooper hated hospitals he ’d lost three people he loved in a hospital so they weren’t his favourite place but there was a part of life and he did want to hear on new of his friends so he had learned to just be good at dealing with them.

Bryan nodded. “My wife’s in surgery right now…life threatening.” He said, looking down. “Her sister’s pretty messed up, too,” He looked over at the person beside him. “Do you know what happened? I wasn’t there. I got a call from the hospital as she was being brought in.”

‘‘You could say that..’‘ Jacob replied to the man questioning him. ‘‘I’m waiting to be let in to see some of the injured to get their statements.’‘ He was sitting with his uniform on and a pad of paper ready on his lap. ‘‘Everyone’s statements really that saw the events unfold.’‘ He hadn’t been in town very long so ending up at such a tragic and chaotic scene was a lot for Jake to take in.

He nodded at the officer. “Well, I don’t know how much they saw, but my wife is currently in surgery and her sister’s being treated for a major injury, too.” He let out a long sigh. “If you have a couple cards, I can hold onto them to give to them once they’re in a position to be able to chat with you.”
