Summary: English words and phrases don’t always line up with its literal meaning.
English was a difficult language with double meanings and slang and rules that didn’t make sense. Dick did his best to learn, but sometimes he still slipped up.
“It is nice.” Dick stated, beaming at his new friend. He and Wally had declared themselves best friends just hours before and now were watching a movie.
“What’s nice?” Wally asked.
“To have a boyfriend!” Dick was smiling so hard it almost hurt. He had three brothers, but they were not the same as a friend. He had never had friends before but now, in a matter of months, he had made two friends! Dick’s smile quickly fell as he realized Wally looked upset.
“We’re not—I mean—We—” Wally blushed a dark red. He didn’t know how to respond. “We’re just friends, Dick. Best friends! But not—”
Dick was confused. “What’s wrong?”
“Dick, we’re not—we’re not boyfriends.”
