Memories With My People
Bry
When. Life. Was. A. Breeze.
My dad has records and records of old school music kept on shelves in our living room. I grew up listening to every Boyz II Men song imaginable. I love how the richness of their voice can fill up any room.
This song reminded me of our first event of senior year, “Moving up Day Mass.” It was such a bittersweet feeling. I remember being relieved that my high-school years were coming to an end but worried about what the near future would bring.
I can’t see the sun when young should be fun
Alessia Cara
I recently discovered Alessia Cara back in February, during a really stressful time in my life. I loved how soothing and delicate her voice was.
This photo is rare footage of my friends and I walking to class. We were in mid conversation discussing college applications, scholarships, and trying to cram for an AP Lit test. This picture perfectly captures our quirky personalities despite how overwhelming life was at the moment.
It was important that I spent much time with my friends during my last year of high school. My boyfriend,Titus and I were in our 2nd year of dating and he did necessarily agree with this idea. I constantly found myself trying to balance my time between my friends and my boyfriend. I remember how jealous he would get meanwhile I just wanted to enjoy myself and have fun.
This song really made me question the relationship I was in. I needed encouragement not harassment. Fortunately ,we were able to talk it out and set boundaries. We are still dating and doing pretty well.
Someone I’ll always laugh with, even at my worst, I’m best with you.
The Rembrants
I have been watching Friends since my senior year. I always sing the theme song, “I’ll be there for you” by the Rembrandts before I watch an episode. It perfectly describes the relationship I have with my 3 best friends.
This song was being played as this picture was taken. This was our last school day together. We have been by each other’s side through every heartbreak, fall out, and celebration. We are the Fantastic 4, they mean the world to me.
“Congratulations” by Post Malone was played on repeat by all of the teachers on graduation day. We shouted the lyrics as we awaited to walk across the stage and turn our tassel.
“We made it.” - Post Malone
I have known the teachers in this photo since the 9th grade. They have truly have been like second mothers for my friends and I. They were always willing to listen to our random problems or complaints. My high school experience would have not been they same without them.
This song was being blasted as I walked the 3rd graduation party of the night. Red solo cups decorated the kitchen (not included in this photo) as my drunk classmates chanted “Party like a rock, party like a rockstar” over and over.
I took a look around and realized that this is the last time I'll be in the same room with my classmates. This photo was the only picture I took after after graduation. I was determined to live in the moment for the little bit of time we had left together.
“We Are Family” by Sister Sledge is the heart of each one of our family reunions. We were up in Hilton Head, South Carolina for our annual summer retreat. This was my last vacation before I would go off to school. This week was filled with good conversation, good food, and good company. I was constantly pulled to the side by my family members to have “little talks” of encouragement. This vacation eased my nerves and helped me have a smooth transition into my first semester of college.
It's so weird how fast time flies. Just a few years ago, I was a little girl playing on the playground. Now I'm in college with real responsibilities. Drake said it best “ started from the bottom [but] now [I’m] here”
I am super proud of the young woman I am becoming. I am extremely thankful for my family and friends as they continue challenge and support me. This new chapter in my life at Georgia Southern has been a blessing and I am eager to see what the future brings.
