Castiel closes his eyes, the emotions heās feeling overwhelming him beyond measure. The dust of his confession settling between him and Dean.
Dean stands before him, the weight of his words bearing down on them from all sides. But when he closes his eyes, nothing about their situation changes. He still feels the love for Dean Winchester deep within his bones. He can feel the anxiety rolling off the man in front of him, and Castiel aches to reach out and comfort the man he loves.
And so, in his final moments, Castiel breaks the unspoken agreement theyāve always followed. He knows they donāt reach for each other like this frequently. They are not allowed to touch too much, but Castiel hates that these walls have built up over the last twelve years of their relationship.
He breaks them down, stepping forward and wrapping his arms around Dean. He tightens his embrace, even though Dean has tensed up. His face tucked into Deanās shoulder, unwilling to see the green-eyed manās face.
Castiel pulls back slightly, dragging his hands up from Deanās back, over his shoulders, up his neck, and cups Deanās face. The stubble there itches his palms, but he doesnāt remove them. Deanās eyes fall closed briefly at the contact, and he leans into the touch. Quietly he speaks up, āWhy does this sound like a goodbye?ā
Castiel can feel his time is up, but he takes what he can as he responds, āBecause it is.ā He can feel tears in his eyes but tries to contain them. Being selfish for the first time in his wants. A small sound, almost a whimper, falls from Deanās lips. Cas catches Deanās eyes, the green still the loveliest shade heās ever seen.
āC-Cas.ā Deanās voice breaks, but he continues, āCas, you gotta know by now. Right?ā
Castiel can feel his head tilt to the side, trying to decipher Deanās vague response. āI know many things Dean, but I donāt know what you are referring to.ā
Deanās hands raise to wrap around Casās wrists. Not too hard but firm, like heās trying to keep Castiel in front of him. The pain in his eyes makes Castielās heartbeat faster. He didnāt say those things to hurt Dean. But he needed to let him know, let him know that he was the best man Castielās ever met. That Castiel has loved him from the moment, he laid a hand on him in hell.
āCas, son of a bitch. You had to do this now? When death is at our door? You made a deal? You know better than that. You idiot. You complete idiot. I donāt want to tell you like this.ā Castiel can tell that the words that Dean shared were difficult for him like he could spit them out but forced the words out of his throat, past his tongue into the increasingly warm air between them. Dean meets his eyes again, and they harden as Dean pushes himself to continue.
āThereās always something in our way, always another apocalypse, another big bad, another god who wants to ruin what we have. And we never escape, you have to know Cas. Please, you have to know I love you too. Of course I do. As if that was ever in question. Even when we were fighting, not speaking I loved you. Nothing else makes any goddamn sense, but I love you Cas, so much.ā
The strike of emotion that hits Castiel almost makes him collapse. Dean loves him too? He feels the same as Castiel?
Castiel lets the words fall easily, āI love you.ā He canāt help the smile that follows. No words spoken have ever held the enormity of his love for Dean, and even the three small words he shared donāt feel profound enough. But they are all he can give the man in front of him.
Dean crumbles in front of him, āDonāt do this, Cas.ā
The depth of his feelings has never felt more overwhelming than in that moment, and then the sound of the Emptyās inevitable arrival fills the room.
Deanās head whips around to look behind him, Casās hands still raised as if to continue cupping Deanās face but no longer touching the face that means so much to him. He hears a quick inhale, and Deanās whole-body tenses. He turns back to face Cas, and his eyes are shining.
There is no more time; itās over. Dean knows how he feels, and in his final moments standing before the green-eyed hunter, Castiel knows that Dean loves him too.
If only they had more time, but thereās no way to be an optimist about this. The deal he made must be followed through, and while he wishes it were any other way. Wishes he could stay with Dean and live the remainder of their lives together in whatever way Dean would have him, but he has to follow through with his promise.
Castielās hands land on Deanās shoulders; he can feel the blood from his earlier cut stick to Deanās shoulder. In his final moments, he knows he needs to do this. If heās spending eternity in nothingness, he wants one thing to keep with him. Precious like a babe to his chest when heās gone.
He takes his fill of Deanās face, the freckles over the bridge of his nose, his eyelashes longer than they had any right to be, his full lips slightly pulled down with emotion, and his green, green eyes.
Castiel does what he never dared to do the last decade; he leans in and kisses Dean like heās wanted to do for as long as he can recall. Pressing his lips to Deanās, he can feel a spark of something travel his spine and wants to stay here in this moment for the remainder of his life, even though he knows they canāt.
Dean responds immediately, pulling Castiel closer and wrapping his arms around Castielās waist and making the kiss hungrier than the chaste press of lips Castiel was aiming for.
Dean kisses like a man possessed, pressing harder, nipping at Castielās lower lip, and tracing over his lips with his tongue. Asking without words for Castiel to respond to him, and Castiel does. He can sense the tendrils of the Empty getting closer and knows theyāre coming for him, but he doesnāt want to stop himself from kissing Dean but pulls away anyway. He sees every emotion Dean is feeling crossing his face and, in his final moments, pushes Dean out of the way.
Just in time because the black liquid curls around his body. Castiel looks over at Dean and smiles at the man he loves even though he can see the tears streaming down his face. This is it; his time is up.
He canāt say anything, but at that moment, heās happy for the chance he had to save Dean, to give him the time he needs to save the world. The world is better with Dean in it. Heāll do what he needs to and will live his life as he deserves. Castielās happiness has never been more profound.
