 For the first project, black paper had to be cut and fitted, so that the space looked interesting, and had a balance between the black and white.

 The second project was the same general form of the first, except that the one that was chosen had a slight unbalance in the black and white, so the use of two grays, were added. The darker gray had to go over the black, while the lighter went over the white, so that the grays would not contrast sharply.

 The project, Mark Variety is made of 100 squares, 10 x 10, each measured at about 1 inch x 1 1/2 inches, and each requiring the need to have a different design on them to form a variety, but still unify in a general direction, flow, and form.

 For my work, I thought it would appear graceful if a figure of a woman was emphasized by the tree body and the branches and leaves of the tree.

 The first part of the Mark Unity assignment was to choose a portion of a bristle board paper with a variety of movement, shapes, and shades of black. From there, on my 5inch x 6inch piece, I had to focus on a 1 inch by 1 1/4 inch part, mark it and let my instructor expand it on a regular copy.

 The second part of the Mark Unity assignment was to use the copy and the small original portion as a guide for when I was making my second piece; this piece had to have marks of the same size going in the same direction, while only being able to use space and density to emphasize the general form.

 The results are as seen.

This is a photo of my self portrait which is about 20 inches by 22 inches of acrylic on a board. I was only allowed to do black and white for most of the assignment. The only exception was for on the face, which required an object of matching value (light and dark) from one color, mine being the use of blue with tint (added white), tone (added grey), and shade (added black).

 An art piece from 2D design class,taught by Jeff Jacobsen; the project title is Merging colors, which is the focus of complementary colors, or split-complementary colors, and the use of parts of a particular artists' works.

Complementary colors are when one color is on the opposite side of the color wheel: Red ~ Green, Red-Orange ~ Blue-Green, Orange ~ Blue, Yellow-Orange ~ Blue-Violet, Yellow ~ Violet, and Yellow-Green ~ Red-Violet.

Split-complementary colors are colors that are on both sides of one of the complementary colors: Violet ~ Yellow-Orange and Violet ~ Yellow-Green.

 The artist I used was Edward Weston and I took pieces of his shell, pepper, flower, and nature pictures to complete the foreground and used an indoor picture to finalize the background. Using the split-complementary colors red-violet and yellow, I used tints, tones, and shades to find the best visual satisfaction.

  I wanted to bring the best out of my pumpkin in a variety of lighting and angle situations, so I took some pictures with the flash, as well as, without the flash at different angles and distances. I found these photographs were the best at bringing out my pumpkin and the natural structures surrounding it.

  The focus I placed on my nature art piece, was, even though the life of nature seemed to be coming to an end, there is so much still going on. The pumpkin, tree, rock and the leaves about the grounds are all still reminiscence of spring and summer.

  What was is coming to an end, as life does itself. Yet, the cycle of life also plants the seeds of new beginnings, and creation, before the life is completely faded.
