Cynthia thought Curt died in that weapons facility. Just for a couple of hours.

She didn't have enough evidence to draw any hard conclusions, but what she did have was enough to convince her that something was wrong. That night, there'd been something about an explosion called in, followed shortly by about ten minutes of dead air. In that time, Cynthia tried over and over again to get ahold of Curt, silence in response.

She was just about to march over and find him herself when she got his transmission.

I don't know how it went, but I can imagine how it might have sounded. "Cynthia, Owen is...oh my god."

And even though she'd heard his voice, that was the moment that convinced her completely that Curt was dead. He must've been kidnapped, he must've been being tortured. Because the way he wailed then sounded just like a dying man.
