lestat's version of the claudia turning is actually the most fucked up haunting scene in the entire show by miles, just everything about it gives me the fucking shivers. the way louis drags her across the floor like a doll. the way it becomes clear that claudia really was just another step in the ladder of their fucked up immortal romance. the fact that she as an individual didn't matter at all but just the idea of her. the way we see louis properly, honestly selfish, lost, and out of control in contrast to how he was caring and considerate in the story he told with confidence and continuity. the way he seems like nothing we've ever seen him as, sort of hollow, unrecognizable. the way lestat warned him about the law. the way he USED,,, LESTAT'S IMMORTAL FEAR OF ABANDONMENT AND LONELINESS AGAINST HIM TO GET WHAT HE WANTED. HE KNEW THE THOUGHT OF BEING ALONE AGAIN WOULD MAKE HIM AGREE TO ANYTHING. it makes me sick to my stomach actually. it immediately sets a contrast to how we were introduced to their relationship in the first few episodes where daniel calls lestat and louis the abused and the abuser. it puts everything in a different light. for me the most horrifying thing about watching it for the first time though was the sudden realization that the person who we think louis is, who we think all the characters we got to know through his retelling of the story are, is completely biased and warped by louis' traumas, repressions, beliefs, false perceptions of the truth, and coping mechanisms. it completely broke down the narrative they had been building for two seasons, and made you question everything you'd watched and felt about these characters. absolutely fucking bone chilling. 10/10 no notes.

my favorite thing about louis is he's a business major in a world of theater kids. everyone's playing psychological games with each other through theater and rock music and the fractured art of storytelling and he's like "but what are the margins on my vampire hotel"

iwtv continues to be so smart in its portrayal of memories and trauma, the way lestat’s memories of his family are so obnoxiously loud, everyone’s screaming all the time for no reason and everyone’s acting like caricatures, like an actual assault on the senses, as if lestat’s mind is filled with unbearable noise every time he thinks about them. lestat’s memories coming at him all fragmented and loud and violent, attacking him and beating him into submission as he desperately tries to escape them is such an interesting contrast to how louis would carefully weave a thread of his past pretending the glaring holes in it weren’t there

I think they did a great job of showing how degrading lestat found life with his family. as a lover of beauty, he found the ugliness of their minds and their lifestyle unbearable. something that really touched me about that part of the book was how dazzled he was by the cleanliness of the monastery.

There is something to be said about how Sinners isn't saying to lock the door on black culture and never let anyone else in. A big part of the scene of Sammie singng at the juke joint is the fact that there are other cultures involved. The chinese characters are accepted gladly and their culture is also shown in the process of looking back and forward.

In my opinion Sinners does point to the issue that white supremacy and a lot of white people who don't think they are racist like to iron over the culture they take in. Seperate it from the context and the people who created the culture until the heart of it is basically gone.

Remmick is a racist, but he also would have likely had a chance to interact with the culture in a normal way and connect with his own if he had just accepted that he wasn't the center of Sammie's music. The need to rip away Sammie's memories, talent, and culture and assimilate it into the hoard for his own gain without caring about what that culture means for the people it came from is the issue with Remmick. It is also the issue with a lot of people who want to view and interact with black culture, but get icked out when they actually have to be faced with the centuries of struggle that led to that genre of music, or dance, or hairstyle being created.

the comparison of the Irish experience to the Black experience, finding out that Remmick comes from a time when the Irish were colonized... while still acknowledging that he was able to use that privilege to escape the vampire hunters... and the first thing he did was un-racist those fuckers in the home he ran in to.

and the absolute juxtaposition of Sammie escaping the vampire hivemind with his life, only to go back home to the church where he is expected to give up the music of his life to assimilate into his father's church

fascinating thing about sinners is how absolutely doomed the narrative is.

like okay if sammie hadn't gone to the juke joint, remmick probably wouldn't have shown up. but then the klan would have. okay smoke took those assholes out solo, if it was him and stack maybe they could have handled it. well the juke joint would have shut down in a month because no one had any real fucking money because of the sharecropping scrip. not to mention two seperate mobs are on their way to fuck the twins up (what do you MEAN you robbed al capone??). okay maybe they covered their tracks, well they're still in the fucking jim crow south and stack and mary have a cool 35 years until loving v virginia so best case scenario is he's broke and watching the love of his life from afar until he's 70. plus annie implied the twins were on borrowed time anyway since she'd been quietly protecting them the whole time they were gone.

idk it both adds to the horror that there was no way out and just solidifies sammie saying it was the best day of his life, like that one little perfect moment was all they were going to get anyway
