graphical fidelity in video games has gotten maybe a bit out of hand. i don't think it's inherently unvirtuous to strive for realism or anything, but, like, think of what's actually involved, physically, when your computer works to render all those triangles. your GPU has to expend energy in the form of electricity, and it works so hard at doing this that it gives off excess heat. in the summer, no less! all in service of what? prettier clouds? i turn the graphics down on almost every game lately even though my computer can handle it. i just don't think it's worth heating up my room an extra five degrees so i can see an amazing digital cirrus
