for the uninitiated, owen's new life smp is a story about power and envy, in which sparrow (the character) kills himself no less than three times on screen (once punctuated with a horrific scream.) he even goes so far as to kill the only acquaintance he's made in this place because he believes that person, who he has projected a closeness on, to be envious of his newfound power. the series, as sparrowlark told me, is a story about a "lonely person who [chases] power no matter how badly it hurts them (..) how sharply it alienates the people who (...) could have cared about them (...) invites questions about being tempted by (...) a very specific ideal of power" and how easily that temptation can consume and destroy. owen here in the qna denies that interpretation.
instead, he seems to believe he's created a story about 'being yourself' (a theme he hammers home in the full qna). new life to him is about the virtues of being ordinary (and colonialist!) it doesn't matter. power doesn't matter. owen seems to think his character was mind controlled into acting the way she did. and to owen, hxh is a story about the cigarettes being really cool cigarettes.
