The Doctor croaked at last, the words still feeling vulnerable in his mouth, even now, with tears falling down his face as he rocked your dying form in his shaking arms. Dizzy, so dizzy with blood loss yet how could you have not heard those words? An utter sadness was result of it, not the relief you had fantasized about all those sleepless nights on The Tardis.
You would let yourself be foolish for the sake of a daydream; thinking up all the times he could say it, during a hug or while watching the sunset or after youād done something nice or after youād messed up or during the day or late at night or in his bed, the words murmured against your lips.Ā
You wish he hadnāt said it. Because him saying those words meant that this was the end. This wasnāt a fantasy, this was The Doctor. He was real and confusing and so damn infuriating and heād said it, heād really said it, which could only mean that there was nothing else to be done.Ā
The Doctor was out of options.
You were bleeding out so fast. Death was crawling up your neck and you werenāt conscious enough to remember why you shouldnāt welcome it. To feel sorrow for the end, to hold onto your name and your memories forĀ at least couple seconds longerĀ before every choice that you could have ever made and every word you could have ever said and every laugh and every cry and every day that could have been but no longer can be slips out of your hands and crumbles to dust on the pavement beside your rapidly pooling blood that must have been the last cry for help your body never received a reply to.
You wanted to tell him you loved him. You wanted to say it back. But you were so weak, so pale and weak that your lips wouldnāt move. So instead you looked to his eyes, glossy and conflicted as they were, panicking, needing him to know it if nothing else before your end.Ā
I love you too, Doctor. I love you so much.Ā
You thought over and over in the horrible empty privacy of your own dying mind, thinking that if you thought hard enough he might hear it, he might know it, you might say it. Let this be the last thing you say, if anything, let it be this.
I love you I love you I love youā¦
The thoughts repeated themselves but your lips never moved until the static that framed your vision closed in on itself, closed in on The Doctor, and everything went black.
ā¦and finally, you could sleep.
