Fundamentally, the King is driven by love just as much as Siffrin is. Everything he does, he does to protect the people and country he cares about, to keep them from suffering the same fate as his homeland. And he's willing to do horrible, awful things to protect them.

And that includes That Scene. The King's actions there aren't born from cruelty as much as desperation. Let me explain.

Look at it from his point of view. You're almost done ensuring the safety of the ones you love when the Saviors finally arrive to stop you. Obviously, the only thing you can do in this situation is to fight and see which side the Universe favors.

But there's a catch. If the things you're noticing mean what you think they do, the bright one who's obviously from your same homeland is in a timeloop. This inherently means that simply defeating the Saviors in combat won't work, because they can just try again and again until they defeat you. It might take a while, but eventually they will win. You still need to kill them here, of course, but your victory will be meaningless.

Then the Saviors offer to parley with you, and you realize you have an opportunity here to do something that will actually last. A combat victory won't work, but if you can demoralize the timelooper, you might have a ghost of a chance of winning for real by making him not want to fight you again in the first place.

It requires deception, of course. And it requires deliberate cruelty. But there is nothing that you won't do to save Vaugarde.

Even if that means crushing this traveler's loved ones to death in your fists while you force him to watch.

anywayyy i will not be made to feel crazy or delusional for believing that people shouldn’t have to earn their place in the world. that everybody should be afforded dignity, even beauty, and life, regardless if they have ‘worked hard’ or checked a box or not. regardless of who they are and where they are born. the laziest person in the world is not less deserving of happiness than the most hardworking person. deserving means nothing. free your mind of the idea of deserving and you will begin to be able to think!!

you spend so so much time shrinking yourself down making sure you aren't anyone else's problem. you can deal with it yourself, you need to be strong!! you make yourself look smaller and smaller but you can feel yourself straining against the bounds of your self imposed cage. but you will not let yourself escape. you can't. you've already sunk far too much time and effort into it.

but something's gotta give! so you start lashing out. it's the only way to let off steam without being truly vulnerable. and if you drive everyone away, you won't have to worry about it anymore anyway. but oh no! everyone's mad at you now. that on its own might be okay, but it's even worse than that, they're WORRIED. this is exactly what you wanted to avoid!! what do you do???

you snap!!! nobody saw how much you were struggling (because you were doing everything in your power to hide it) but they NEED TO SEE IT. if they want to be worried so badly, you can give them something to worry about! you won't be ignored or left alone now because it's physically impossible to do so. world-ending power is at your fingertips and you use it for what? to be seen and be heard. to be loved!! that's it!!!
