I can't appreciate or support the fat acceptance movement. They glorify unhealthy behaviors and being overweight, but more importantly, they blame others and society for the problems overweight people experience as a result of being overweight. It's fine to not exercise, to eat an unhealthy amount of food, and to be overweight. That's your right as a human being to make that choice, but be prepared to accept reality. If you're overweight, the struggles you face for being overweight are not society's fault. Rather, they are consequences of the choices you've made. Don't blame doctors for charging more for certain procedures. It's more difficult and costs more for them to work on overweight patients. Don't blame clothing stores for not having sizes that fit you. They make the sizes that sell best, and it's their right to run their businesses the way they see fit. Don't blame airlines because you have to spend more money to buy a more expensive or multiple seats on an airplane because you can't fit in a regular one. Don't shame skinny and fit people for posting selfies on social media if it makes you feel bad about yourself. That's not their problem. It's not Disneyland's fault if a person is too overweight to ride some of their rides. It doesn't mean they hate overweight people. They don't let people who are too short ride their rides, but that doesn't mean they hate short people. It's a safety issue, that's all. These are just a few examples of the struggles of overweight people I see or hear about on a regular basis. There just needs to be an understanding that if you're overweight, there are going to be limitations on the things you can do, the clothes that are available for you to buy, and the opportunities you may have. The reason I have very little sympathy for MOST overweight people is because for MOST of them, being overweight is a lifestyle choice. Weight is manageable. Also, I hear all the time how there's so much fat shame and it needs to stop. Hearing that makes me roll my eyes because I hear a lot more skinny shaming going on nowadays. It's always been unacceptable to make comments like, "try a salad" to an overweight person, but apparently, it's perfectly okay to tell a skinny person to "eat a hamburger". If fat shaming is wrong (which it is), then skinny shaming is just as wrong and it's hypocritical. I don't hate overweight people. My best friend is overweight, but he realizes that his weight is well above the healthy average and that it is endangering his health. He makes an effort to better himself. I have nothing but respect for people like him. The people I can't stand are the kind who get angry when a store "doesn't carry clothes for heavier-set people" when the store already carries like, a XXXL size. If you have a hard time finding clothes your size in your area, the problem lies with you. I don't care if you're overweight. I don't even care if you're proud of being overweight. Just don't be so fiercely proud of it and unwilling to change, and then complain that society is picking on you because, in reality, your decisions are what got you where you are.
