that’s partly why i’ve always been so touched by anthy’s line “you remind me so much of dios, when i loved him” because there’s such great uncertainty and unreliability, anyway, in whatever future she could have with utena if she broke out of this cycle that to her maybe it’s safer to stay. and if dios could go on to become someone as cruel as akio, couldn’t utena? - wouldn’t there be risk of leaving it all with such monumental effort just to enter another repetition of this? but where dios left anthy to take the swords and eventually turned against her too as the scapegoat, utena put herself through that danger to reach anthy. anthy projects a little bit of an image of her own onto utena, but when utena pries open the coffin with hands bloodied with the effort, anthy realizes, i think, maybe she isn’t like dios after all

If things are going bad in your life the most important thing you can do is fixate on a era of your life you can never return to. It is really important to romanticize it and remember it so incorrectly that it’s more of a false idol for worship than a memory. No one has ever successfully returned to the idealized past but you will be the first to succeed. You will succeed you simply must recreate a false and limping facsimile of who you were back then. You must ignore your beautiful opportunities to live your present life. It is important to unbury a peaceful corpse and climb inside it. I promise it will feel just as good as you remember.

have spoken about this without end but i really like how you can see how certain events prompt utena’s thinking about anthy which she silently carries with her across scenes or even episodes. you see how even the little things she experiences stay in her mind even if they’d seem pretty mundane on the surface or the people around her wouldn’t think much of it. i think that’s one of the things that makes her feel so human as a protagonist to me

Art of UTENA - 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' Making of Visuals Book

This 112 page color and black and white combined artbook from 1999 celebrates both the series and movie artwork and production process!! You can now peruse the totally reasonable copy above on the Empty Movement forums, or you can go hit the Internet Archive for the bonkers 8k pixels across per page version!!

One of the interviews featured in this book has already been translated, should you want to read more from Juugo Kazayama about script and storyboarding the series!

This artbook was an early source of some of the rarer pieces of Utena art, and has been part of the Empty Movement gallery for over 20 years! I'm hyped to finally share a copy of it that I think gets across the 'experience' of the book in person as best I could manage! The images have been descreened and selectively cleaned for legibility..a miserable process given the annoying repeating background that the scanner choked on. But my work is your win!
