Do any of y'all want help with Canadianising your fics?

A few tips: 1. HIPAA, Green Cards, Pleading the Fifth, etc. are not Canadian things.

2. While private health insurance exists here (largely through employers), everyone gets free healthcare because taxes pay for (most) of it.

3. With all checking and waiting around, flying from Ottawa to Montréal would take longer than driving.

One of the most frequently asked questions on social media seems to be about Ilya and his dickhead dad having to 'meet' the Minister, who may or may not be Svetlana's dad, a person they've presumably known a long time. If I am going to meet my friends at a restaurant after work, I am not meeting them for the first time.

Fanfic writers! You're great, and I am trying to be more patient (with middling success) about 'oh, that's not Canadian' bits, but please, please, please understand that the cottage is not in Ottawa. Ottawa is a CITY (though with some rural bits) where Shane grew up. Well over a million people live in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. It'd be like saying the cottage was in Cleveland or Manchester or Oslo.

His parents' cottage is where he and his family would have spent a great deal of time during the summers and maybe on weekends too, but is not the house his parents live in most of the time.

Shane's cottage is canonically (at least) two hours from the Ottawa airport.

In the books, it's just 'in Ontario'; a couple of hours from Ottawa, a fancy lakeside cottage could be in the Rideau Lakes, in the Ottawa Valley (where my parents are from) and/or closer to Algonquin Park, or...a lot of other places. Canadian Shield nonsense means lakes and forests are plentiful. (Ontario is ~50% bigger than Texas, and Quebec is even bigger than that.)

In the show, the cottage is in Lanaudière, QC which is about three hours away. (So why Ilya flies into Ottawa and not Montréal is nonsensical; Jacob apparently forgot that Western Quebec/the Gatineau Hills are also prime cottage country and much closer. Also, that tv doc describing it as Eastern Quebec...was that to disguise where it was to would-be stalkers? Or just a mistake? Eastern Quebec is...really far away.)

The cottage scenes were filmed even further away, in the other direction, in Muskoka, a nice, 4-5 hour drive from Ottawa.

Yuna and David live in a house in Ottawa, have a cottage about two hours away for vacationing.

Shane has a condo (or house) in Montréal (for now), and a cottage very near his parents'.
