I'm still not over the pinup from Buddy Stories. (aka let me rant for a bit about incredibly minor character design details because I have rot in my brain)
I'm assuming if you found this post you care about this stupid guy as much as I do, or are morbidly curious enough to continue reading despite any prior investment (or lack thereof, in which case, thank you lol). I'm not going to bother with introductions either way though.
So we've only seen young Kishibe a handful of times, primarily in the "All About Kishibe!" extra from volume 8 and the two illustrations he's featured in in Buddy Stories (which includes the pinup above). And across all of them, I've noticed some interesting discrepancies.
Fist off, and most glaringly to me, his hair! I don't think we've ever seen young Kishibe drawn with this lighter colored hair, it's always filled in with straight black. ...I'm sure the rational explanation is that this change was made for compositional purposes, but I still think it's a weird detail. There's other areas of darker values, Fujimoto could've easily used the darker purple/navy from the suit pants or Quanxi's eyepatch even, but no. He chose this dusty blonde color that lowkey alludes to the color of his hair in the anime, which was almost certainly in production when the illustration was made. Either way, weird.
Second, and the bigger discrepancy, his earrings.
Two on the left, one on the right in the present day. Okay, that's all well and good. But then... inexplicably, they're switched for young Kishibe. Two on the right, one on the left. I figured maybe this was just an oversight on Fujimoto's part, but it's remarkably consistent throughout damn near every panel of "All About Kishibe!".
Why?! Why did he (fujimoto) do this? You can even see it in the pinup, there's only one earring on the left ear. The only panel that goes against this is also the only panel where his earrings are absent, where he professes his love.
I don't have an explanation for this, and I doubt I'll ever have a proper one from Fujimoto because... Well, I'm no interviewer, and I doubt any interviewers would bother wasting air or print space on such a trivial detail. But it's weird, right? Why make such a slight but noticeable change to a character's design for their younger version specifically?
...I have a rough theory. Probably not a very good one, but it's mine and you've gotten this far. I think it might have something to do with Quanxi's rejection, (maybe even Minami's departure in Buddy Stories, if you want to rope that into canon) because again, that's the only time we don't see the earrings at all. Maybe in between the events of the series and the nine year mark for his & Quanxi's "relationship", he stopped wearing earrings for a bit, and got them re-pierced on the opposite sides for whatever reason. I'm sure someone more creative than me could take those ideas and run with them in like a fanfic or something. I think that'd be fun.
That's about it, honestly. I could probably keep going on about his facial hair or his hair length, but I don't feel like it. I already think about this guy far more than any rational person should, and I am no better for it lol
