a lot of people are saying that this is the moment when their failure to understand each other is at its peak… am I the only one who thinks that in this moment, they understand each other just fine? they both know what’s at stake. they both know, after this exchange of words, that the other stands at a line they cannot cross. they both know in this moment that they have things that they can’t walk away from, not even for love of each other. they both know that the world has grown bigger than the twin prides of yunmeng.

and to me, that’s even sadder than a misunderstanding.  a misunderstanding could be cleared up by a good enough conversation. a misunderstanding can be fixed. far worse is a perfect understanding.

I think my read of how this is a misunderstanding is in how they read what it says about their feelings for each other. because for Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian’s willingness to walk away from Jiang Sect, and the ease with which he seems to accept that he should be cut off, I think twigs all his abandonment issues and fear that nobody really loves him and people are just waiting for an excuse to walk away; and specifically that Wei Wuxian loves and cares for these strangers who Jiang Cheng thinks of as enemies more than he loves and cares for Jiang Cheng (and Jiang Yanli). it reinforces, for Jiang Cheng, the idea that Wei Wuxian doesn’t and maybe never has really cared about them.

and Wei Wuxian reads Jiang Cheng saying this as him emphasizing the danger that Wei Wuxian is posing to the sect, the liability that he has become, and thinks he is protecting them by telling Jiang Cheng to go ahead and cut him off. he’s giving Jiang Cheng permission, in his view, to let him go; the same way he talks about releasing Jiang Cheng from any obligation or debt at Guanyin Temple. he thinks he’s doing Jiang Cheng a kindness by, in some sense, absolving him of his responsibility for what happens to Wei Wuxian. he’s cutting himself off from them out of love.

I think they do understand what the other is prioritizing and to a certain extent why; I think the misunderstanding is about what that says about what they mean to each other in spite of that line being drawn.

Jiang Cheng is scared that people will leave him and Wei Wuxian is scared that people will ask him to leave.
