British runner Ben Smith has just completed 401 marathons in 401 days

“I’m actually aching today, my legs have been alright for the last 101 days and typical, last day, legs ache, back aches, but I’ve got one day left,” he said.

“I’m doing this to raise £250,000 for two anti-bullying charities.

"I was bullied for eight years of my life at school. It affected my confidence and self-esteem and that led to me trying to take my own life when I was 18.”

After coming out as gay, the runner wanted to raise awareness of the damage caused by bullying and to support his chosen charities, Kidscape and Stonewall.

He said: “A key objective of The 401 Challenge has been to involve as many people as possible and create opportunities for children, young people and adults to discuss the difficult topics of bullying and sexuality.”

After the final marathon, his team have put together a three-month “cool down” involving a month of back-to-back half marathons, followed by a month of 10km runs and a month of daily 5km runs.

the maximum SSI for a single person is $8,796/yr if a disabled person marries another, each drops to a max of $6,600/yr

Not to mention we aren’t allowed to have more than $2,000 saved at a time. EVER. Like EVER or we lose all benefits completely. In the bank, in cash, it doesn’t matter. The government literally keeps us poor, while also making us pay immense amounts of money for health care that we require to even survive or function (let alone work enough to be able to get off of benefits, not to mention that there are a ton of people who will never be able to do that anyways). It’s a very, very broken system and not one that was ever meant to actually help anyone. 

Plus, “marriage equality” is still a huge problem for disabled people (as you can see), which is something almost everyone is ignorant to/doesn’t care about.

The city of Flint, Michigan, best known across the nation for a water-pollution crisis which left an unknown number of residents exposed to dangerous levels of lead that has not yet been resolved, is running into major problems with another public utility. Trash pickup in the city is suspended until further notice, and the infrastructural ramifications could be devastating.

Jesus christ, seriously? You understand that third parties don’t have the resources of the bigger parties, right? They don’t have the funds. They don’t have the manpower. They don’t have the advantage of constant media discussion of their existence or decades of being the default choices. They put themselves out there for presidential elections because that’s the only time they get even a little attention and if they can get a bit of a bump in the polls or a fraction of the vote then they can start taking advantage of things like federal funding and public awareness. But sure, throw a fit because they don’t personally show up to request your fucking attention because you can’t take responsibility for doing the work of getting yourself some god damned information. Sure.

exactly. contesting presidential elections that they wont win not even close is a strategy that isn’t working for them and I suggested several other methods of gain exposure and votes, like working with various organizations and contesting small elections and climbing up from there. But I mean. If ya’ll refuse to change oh well.

It also takes very little resources to solicit the volunteers necessary to build people power in a diverse array of places and to continue building off the momentum that election spotlight temporarily provides them.

In the age of social media, where campaigns have generated their own shine and attracted the attention of mainstream media, it requires virtually little effort to expand a voter/constituent base in order to continue engaging them for local elections & soliciting donations.

Instead the Green Party, for example, has primarily focused on getting Jill stein on the ballot, which they do every election cycle and fail to accomplish. They probably could make leaps and bounds if they were better at building a broad base. Getting Jill on the ballot as a serious contender is only a fraction of the battle if meanwhile you don’t build people power around local elections at the same time. People not only want to know how your party plans to transform the presidency but state and local legislatures as well.

Also, it’s not really a selling point, nor is it dramatically different from republican or democratic speak, to defend third parties by using the logic of ‘if it’s not immediately accessible to you then you’re just lazy/not trying hard enough/don’t want it that badly.’ If your movement can’t engage people beyond the white middle class perpetually plugged in ‘progressives’ that primarily comprise the Green Party, then it’s not as revolutionary as you’d like to claim.
