No-Heat Curls! (and an adorable up-do)
If you know me in person, you will know that whenever I am wearing an updo it is always ALWAYS and elaborate ploy to get my stubborn straight hair to curl.
I gave up using heat on my hair almost two years ago because one, It was terrible for it and made it dull and two, styling my hair with heat never lasted long anyway.
I have tried all sorts of heatless braids and buns and pins and rags to try and get my hair to curl (you name it I’ve probably uncomfortably slept with it in my hair). Nothing had really satisfied me either the curls look unnatural, or the time it takes to make isn’t worth how long they last…. Until now!
This heatless-curling up-do is quick, easy, curls my hair well and looks amazing as its own hairstyle. So without further ado….
1. Begin with semi-dry hair, too wet and it won’t dry, too dry and it won’t curl (it may take some practice to find out what works for you)
2. Since my hair is so long and thick I divide my hair in two for this hairstyle, if yours is thinner you can just use one section!
3. Using a tiny elastic band, tie up the very tips of your hair (if any layers are falling out you can just wrap them in later).
4. Next you want to divide this section in half and flip the ends through this hole. Continue doing this, tucking in any layers that fell out as you go.
5. Soon your twists should begin to buckle, let them curl up to your head and arrange them as you like (try to hide the tips of your hair in the middle with the twists laying over them).
6. Then using bobby pins secure the twists in place! It should be easy to pin into the twists but if your having trouble try criss-crossing them into each other.
7. Voila! Part one is complete! A super cute up-do without any crazy braids or curlers in sight.
My favourite part about this style is that it works so well on its own, and can even withstand the wind you can see in my outfit photo! I am wearing my sunflower dress (you can read how to pattern make it here!), a cute green cardigan and I accessorised my hairstyle with this cute hair clip from Mimco.
and even after a long day running about the city with my impeccably dressed friends, my hair is still holding strong!
At this point I could take my hair down and wear it curly, but I decided to sleep on it overnight. The best way I’ve found to keep this style intact while you sleep is by wearing a silk headscarf because it reduces the frizziness from your pillow and holds the twists in place.
1. I wake up the next day with the hairstyle intact albeit a tiny bit squished and begin by pulling out the thousands of pins and hair ties I put in my hair (If your hair is as thick as mine you’ll understand)
2. Pull a finger-sized section of hair out of one of the twists and run it through a brush or comb. Immediately after doing this, twirl it back up tightly and watch it spring free into a beautiful, natural looking curl.
3. Repeat this until you have brushed out all of your hair.
4. Spritz your curls with some hairspray and bask in the glory that is your glamorous curly hair!
Hey! Does that scarf look familiar? I paired my curls with a cute overall playsuit, cropped t-shirt and how could I forget my red lips to go with my big smile!
This has been my most successful heatless curling technique to date, I can wear these curls for days as they morph into a messy boho style all by themselves! So as a straight haired gal who just wants a bit of curl to her hair, I think this picture sums up how I feel pretty nicely…
