We've moved on to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at bedtime. I have loved Roald Dahl books since I was eight, but never really thought about how much I loved Quentin Blake's drawings until 16 years ago, when I stumbled on an exhibit featuring his work at the National Portrait Gallery in London. I admire the looseness and the vulnerability of his lines. There's a fly in the house and it's driving me crazy because it won't stay still long enough for me to use my patented move on it. I find if I hover over a fly slowly with a rolled up paper, it doesn't always register my presence. Then, when I'm within an inch of it, I whack the paper down super fast. It usually works! When [S] was four, I found her a vintage Scandinavian dollhouse from the 1970s that had the same bathroom tile we had in my house growing up. Ever since then, I've been somewhat of a midcentury doll house enthusiast, keeping my eyes out for used Lundby houses and furniture (common in places like Sweden but rare in North America). Yesterday, I found one locally for $15 and snapped it up! It has the coolest retro wallpaper. An empty doll house holds all sorts of possibilities. Five years ago tonight, when you girls were still very small (18 months and not yet 3), we watched our house and all our possessions burn. I have never seen it as a tragedy, though, because nobody was hurt. And when I think back now, I am reminded of just how strong and resilient our family is.
