“Herodias was enraged with John the Baptist for preaching against her marriage to Herod, the brother of her first husband. According to the New Testament, she instructed her daughter Salome to ask Herod for the Baptist’s head as a reward for her dancing. A text by Saint Jerome recounts that when Herodias received the severed head, she pierced the Baptist’s tongue with a needle. In this painting, Cairo made the macabre subject even more disturbing through dramatic lighting and the vivid realism with which he portrayed Herodias swooning in ecstasy as she mutilates the tongue that spoke against her.”

This video is being spread around on social media. It’s often titled “Historian schools billionaires on marginal tax rates” or something similar.

Rutger Bregman does lay down some truth bombs and it is nice to see him confront all the rich folks at the Davos conference without fear.

That said, I feel like he is not the star of this video. (And Rutger agrees.)

Some asshat from Yahoo spurted Trump talking points and asks how we can fix things without taxing the rich. Winnie Byanyima gives an amazing response about how we do not track quality jobs for unemployment numbers. Something I have been complaining about for a while now.

I thought maybe I would try to balance things and give her the credit she deserves.

Winifred Byanyima is a Ugandan aeronautical engineer, politician, and diplomat. She is the executive director of Oxfam International. She seems like a badass, but I’m not sure that is appropriate to add to her Wikipedia page.

But that stuff shouldn’t just be the focus when I’m pregnant or getting pregnant. My hormones and the health of my sexual organs should be a priority. And I’m frustrated by the way I have been taught about my body. I’m frustrated that for 29 years of my life I was told not to care about my uterus until it’s time to have kids. I’m frustrated that my period has been treated like an inconvenience, not like a vital part of my body’s function. And I’m channeling that frustration into doing what is necessary to give my body, my uterus, the love she deserves

Women are taught not to discuss womb health until something goes wrong. Especially as a black woman, when we go to doctors for help and are given harmful medications that make our bodies toxic (another convo).

Read an amazing book about womb health called “30 days to better Periods and Womb health naturally” which really helped to explain certain things I had been told everyone went through, didnt have to be so and periods did not have to be a painful and miserable time of the month.

I have a friend who hasn’t had her period in almost a year (maybe more by now) and she doesn’t think it’s a priority to get that checked out. I keep telling her that her body isn’t functioning the way that it should and that’s alarming but she just shrugs and says she doesn’t care about having kids anyway and periods are an inconvenience. Women are constantly taught that our reproductive system is only important when it comes to hearing children to the point that something could be alarmingly wrong and we not care.

The outrage is that there’s enough money in the world to be able to fix Notre Dame AND environmental damage AND give everyone free healthcare AND fix a slew of other institutional issues but the super rich are simply unwilling to do so for entirely self-serving reasons.

we need to be taught disability history in school because it is 2019, i am 20 years old, and i am only now learning that the National Association of the Deaf had to take Netflix to court in 2012 in order for closed captioning to be required on streaming sites (source). any amount of accessibility in our lives has been fought for, and those stories need to be told.
