trains will announce you're stopping in places you never knew existed
and when it gets dark & you're a little disorientated they like to slip in a couple that didn't exist before

Once I’ve finished pondering my orb I begin orbiting my pond
I really love this
also there’s no pithy, Tumblr-friendly way of simultaneously saying ‘Rishi Sunak being a man of colour doesn’t let him off the hook for the crappy Tory policies he’ll undoubtedly install’
and ‘the left needs to make sure that their criticism of Rishi Sunak does not veer into racism because racism is unacceptable even when directed at Tories’
and ‘Britain having its first British Asian PM is a big freaking deal and is going to be significant to Brits of colour across the political spectrum’
and ‘the fact that Rishi Sunak has not been elected by the general public in such a time of political upheaval is just plain appalling, ‘mandate from the people’ my arse’
but that doesn’t mean it isn’t all true
rest in the deepest most profound peace 💔

actually genuinely if you are going to talk about serious topics you need to say the words for the thing you're talking about
i've seen people talking about abuse and rape spend the whole post saying "@.bus3" and "rpe". People will spell suicide like su1c1de, or just say "unalive" and "aliven't". pedophile is now p*d*ph*le. I get that you have to do that on tiktok, but that's because tiktok takes things down.
If you're going to discuss serious topics on tumblr, please, just spell out what you're saying. Even aside from being terrible for screen readers, it's harder, slower, and incredibly distracting to read a mile-long post about mental health & depression that's desperately trying to avoid the word "suicide". Meanwhile, people who have "suicide" as a filtered word on tumblr will see the post, because when you talk about suicide but say su1c1de or sewerslide or unalived, anyone who has filtered "suicide" because it's a triggering topic to them will now see the post. It is IMPORTANT to use the actual word in your TW tags and in your post. Seriously.
reblogging this again because it’s important and needs a signal boost
Okay, I just saw someone reblog with these tags:
#I have never been on TikTok and I hate everything about it#'aliven't' oh my God people#let's cutesywoobify suicide sure that sounds great
and I think it's very important that while spreading this info, people also understand why people are doing this kind of thing.
see, tumblr users who don't use tiktok are almost completely unaware of how actively hostile that app is. Not the community using it, necessarily, but the app itself. the way that tumblr runs and the way that tiktok runs are diametrically opposed to each other in every way and have almost no overlap at all.
the reason people use words like "unalive" or censorships like "$u!c!d3" is because, on that app, you are not allowed to use the word "suicide". there's a very, very broad category of words that you are just Not Allowed To Use, and if you use those words, your account (potentially an account with thousands of subscribers and maybe even hundreds of videos, and, in many cases, an actually important or helpful account that's educating people about important things) just might just... get removed, with no warning and no appeal.
and when I say "just might" I mean "just might". there's absolutely no consistency. I've seen historians talking about genocide and keeping their account for years, and I've seen Princess Daisy cosplayers drop off the face of the earth with no warning. if you think the Tumblr moderation is bad it's got NOTHING on TikTok.
but the thing is, people are DESPERATE to talk about important topics -- that's what these things are, important topics -- and people NEED to talk about them, so they come up with workarounds.
for example, sex workers on tiktok need to call their work "corn", and often use the corn emoji 🌽 to signify what they do. historians talking about genocide will often need to edit their captions to say "the G word" or whatever when they talk about it. the phrases "not-see" and "yahtzee" show up a lot, and everyone knows that they're euphemisms for "Nazi". these aren't dogwhistles, and they're not people trying to be cute, they're people trying to have important conversations about serious topics while the algorithm panopticon is watching.
the word "unalive" is literally just a new synonym for the words "die" or "kill" that the TikTok algorithm hasn't picked up on yet.
and obviously yes I agree with the original post, that's why I reblogged it in the first place, but we need to approach this from the perspective of "hey, you don't need to do that here" and not "why are young people so stupid", because they're not stupid, they're just ignorant of their freedoms here.
