We all know Gideon is 18 and internally she is the most 18 year old to ever be 18. Shes also super muscly and wearing skull paint that probably hides the leftover baby fat and pimples.

What if everyone at Canaan house just assumed that Gideon was a good 5-10 years older than Harrow like the 2nd/7th/8th houses. What if they thought that Gideon was being quiet so to not disagree with her young master and was offering counsel in private.

What if they thought Gideon was the voice of reason only to talk to her and realize nope-. The ninth is just two bickering teenagers with no adult supervision. Emperor help them all.

This would make Camilla's read in As Yet Unsent that she was "no older than 17" a lot funnier too tbh ajwoiejawoieg. The average person assuming at first Gideon is like mid 20s, versus Cam and Pal who saw her distressed and then heard her speak within a few minutes are like "oh that's a baby" lmao.

Bonus points too that Harrow is probably not even 5 feet tall and "was acutely aware she might be mistaken for younger." When they try to pass Nona as Harrow they borrow clothes from the smallest BoE member they can find and then cinch a lot of belts really tight to make those work. Gideon thinks Harrow looks no older than Jeannemary (14), Joli thinks Nona can't be more than 14 at most even as someone who's dealt with knobbly undergrown kids, and Hot Sauce (14) has an easier time passing for an adult at the broadcast than Nona. (And of course there's Mercy buying that she's 15 and reducing her age forever but you know.)

Imagine everyone thinking Harrow is probably around Isaac's age until they talk to her enough and even then they're not entirely sure. And looking at big mute brute Gideon like "Damn, she really has to put up with this brat." And surprise they're almost the same age and equally petty lmao.

(And then we get River Canaan where Ortus really just does have to put up with this kid, rest in peace.)

I do think Magnus could have guessed that Gideon was early 20s looking after a baby (4th house age) Harrow.

Gideon, to him, is an a stoic and principled ninth Cav off her planet for the first time and looking after her young necromancer. A damn good sword, protective and cool under pressure. He never realized Gideon was also a baby til the river.

One of the best ones I saw was a thing noting that every single one of the few survivors of suicide jumps off of the Golden Gate Bridge realized, on the way down, that the problems they were killing themselves over actually were fixable or could be worked through...except for the now - extremely unfixable - problem of gravity.

Went to the Holocaust Museum in DC once. There was a video interview of an Auschwitz survivor who said he and some other prisoners stayed up all night with a man who wanted to kill himself. The man didn’t kill himself and survived to liberation.

In the video the survivor said “Never seek a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And they’re all temporary problems.”

Hearing that from a guy who survived the Holocaust rewired my brain a little bit.

I think something a lot of people don't understand is that depression is not suicidality, and suicidality is not depression. People can, and are, depressed without being suicidal, and sometimes suicidality peaks as people are emerging from depression. Suicidality is a wave, and the trick is to allow that wave to crest and subside WITHOUT acting on it. Whatever it takes to ride it out. For some people that's distraction, like watching television. For others it's calling a friend -- not to talk about the suicidality, but just to talk. For others it could be as simple as going to sit in a coffee shop or library, because the presence of other people is a huge diminisher of suicide risk. That's what suicide safety planning is about. It's like having any other type of emergency plan, like a plan for fire or evacuation. It's making a plan when you are in the frame of mind to do so, so that you can just DO the plan without having to think about it when the occasion arises. When you're in the midst of suicidal ideation, or even intent, you're not in a problem-solving mood. So knowing past!you, with the help of a therapist hopefully, came up with the plan and all you have to do is follow up until the wave crests and subsides, is what allows you to see another day.

I recognize that sometimes Cytherea feels like a cartoon villain but I would just like to say, as someone with chronic illness, the idea of having the person I loved most in the world die so that I could get better, only to find out she died so that I could be sick for eternity.... and then to BE sick for TEN THOUSAND YEARS, watching every but you and four people who don't even remember your last name die, while you are still in horrible pain. This is back on my dash! And listen, I love to see Amir Khusrau getting appreciation, but this translation ignores a lot. The original rhymes! And scans! And does playful things with register! And conveys a tone of affectionate banter between the two speakers, not least because it has them both addressing each other as sakhi (translated above as “girl”) in the last two lines. I think taking some liberties with line order is worth it to preserve more of the rest—and I think there’s a better translation of sakhi. And so:
