while aphobia is broadly speaking less in vogue in fandom spaces than it was in, like, 2018 (insert ye olde discourse war flashbacks here) i do think a lot of peoples’ true colors come out when characters - ESPECIALLY popular ones - are canonically aromantic or asexual

when it feels like their right to sexualize or ship a character is taken out of their hands and so that character’s sexuality is treated as more of a roadblock or annoying ground rule they need to find a loophole around, something shippers begrudgingly throw one or two bones to in the form of tags that specify ugh fine, they’re aromantic/asexual but not in that uncool way, they’re still a total [pervert/hopeless romantic], they’ll still do it with their One True Love!

(…which, in how monogamously fandom approaches romance, see every instance of ✨Kyaaa!-I-Never-Felt-This-Way-With-My-Ex!✨ in shipfics, doesn’t really feel much like much has changed anyway, but that’s another topic XD)

and it is disheartening to have your sexuality treated as something people only really go along with because they have to. your representation is important… but not as important as peoples’ otp 5evers and their god given rights to make smutfics of every character that’s ever breathed

(not to say aspec orientations are the only target of this of course, but speaking from experience with my sexuality here)

all of this to say: give some positivity! show aspec identities aren’t just boring rules but interesting and engaging all on their own! what are some aro/ace headcanons y’all have? characters or even ships you think are elevated by a lack of romantic/sexual attraction? qprs you like to headcanon? TELL MEEE

i personally love nonsexual romance in hero/villain or otherwise more complicated ships - so often lust is treated as something that makes people crazy, it’s sometimes more interesting to have to tackle a difficult romance with none of it! or, like how this post talks about, derangedly devoted nonromantic relationships! i love being aroace because i think it makes me a better horror writer, the fear of a loss of wholeness and independence is such a fun feeling to channel into those works! and you bet sex repulsion makes me LOVE writing body horror!

aspec stories can be cool!!! so often they ARE cool!!! i wanna celebrate them more!!!!
