You donât hear it a lot: but England is a terrifying place to live. And I know reading that single line will have some people snickering as if what I said isnât true. Maybe we arenât as bad as some places: that much is true. We donât have gun crime, racism isnât as much as heard of (though it definitely exists in a stupid amount). But thatâs also because you lot donât hear about it: you donât hear it unless youâre in the country or from the country and keeping up with everything.
As a non-binary trans masc person, itâs terrifying to even step out of the house and Iâm not even publicly out yet. The amount of trans and homophobia around England is insane and terrifying: itâs to the point where everyday Iâm reading the news and another LGBTQ-related attack is somewhere on the front page. Another transgender person has been murdered in cold blood or another lesbian couple has been beaten up on the tube in London. As someone who has been constantly penalised and put down for trying to be who I am, as well as outted against my will, itâs scary to read these things everyday. It was heart breaking to watch GMB every morning and see Piers Morgan invalidating my gender through an argument with someone who was trying his best to defend me. It was cringe-worthy hearing the comments coming from my own âfriendââs mouth when I tried to come out.
JKR was a perfect example of just the power of the hate in this country: her voice - and her supporters voices - were so loud that they got the government to backtrack on their plans to allow me to change my legal gender easier. Because it invalidated sexual assault survivors and their hardships. I was sexually assaulted when I was 8: and again when I was 11. Believe me when I tell you, letting a transgender woman use the fucking womanâs bathroom is NOT invalidating your assault. That sounds like a you problem, not theirs.
The government is actively enabling the persistent LGBTQ hate in this country. In the last four months there have been several online petitions which they have HAD to look at due to 100k+ signatures. Each time their only was response was âNo, we support you, but no. Too much work.â If you refuse to recognise me as existing- to recognise that I am a law abiding person who deserves to be able to legally be me- then you are not supporting me.
The NHS has a wait time of anywhere from two years to ten years for gender clinic appointments: just to get put on hormone medication, you could be waiting up to 7 years for one appointment. Unless you go private that is. Not only is private extremely expensive, but the NHS practitioners have every right to DENY your referral / diagnosis because it wasnât done by an NHS professional. So even if you do go private, thereâs no guarantee. A lot of transgender people are resorting to illegally obtaining hormone drugs from dealers. Weâre that desperate.
Itâs gotten so bad that OTHER COUNTRIES are acknowledging that itâs unsafe to live here. Two years ago a British transgender women sought asylum in New Zealand based purely off of her gender identity and WAS SUCCESSFUL. Portugal also accepts asylum seekers based off of gender identity. That is how bad it is here. Transgender people are dying everyday. This is how bad it is.
Thereâs so much more I can rant about but itâs 7am and I havenât slept. Iâm tired. But I just spent three hours crying over this shirt and how not only me but hundreds of thousands of other Transgender people in England have it bad; and thereâs no one here to help us.
I have to put the sequence of events in order because I get the impression OP might be too young to know how this all played out to get this bad. 10 years ago, transphobia was rampant in the UK but it was also getting called out. Discrimination happened but it wasnât institutionalised like it is now. TERFS were largely unknown, or viewed as crazy mumsnet ladies. Then almost overnight, the TERF lobby becomes one of the most powerful political forces in the country. They have a ton of funding and a huge amount of influence. People with national platforms come out as TERFS and force a topic no one cares about into the mainstream.
How did all this happen? Well, take a fucking guess. Really. Guess which incredibly rich and powerful person took some fringe extremism and made it her pet cause. JKR is not an example of UK transphobia , sheâs the literal engine of the TERF movement. Sheâs their primary funding, every fucking penny we spent on her work made this happen. I hate this, god. Be careful out there.
(Sorry I sound like a conspiracy theorist but I literally watched all this happen while trans people were warning everyone how evil JKR was and no one listened and so yeah, here we fucking are.)
Itâs not that Rowling made transphobia exist in the UK - there was already tons of transphobia (and transmisogyny more specifically) in UK media and news outlets.
The big change was that this transphobia was limited to right-wing news outlets, like The Daily Mail; the only transphobic writers in the public eye were people like Piers Morgan or Richard Littlejohn, your typical cishet upper-middle class white men who were generally A Bit (Sometimes Very) Bigoted in a lot of different areas. Easy enough to ignore if you didnât read those papers, or know anyone who did.
Rowling becoming a TERF was what made left-wing and centrist news outlets become outwardly transphobic. The Left-wing press werenât necessarily trans-positive, but trans issues were largely seen as being included under LGBTQIA+ reporting, and the left-wing papers largely fancied themselves as being progressive in that area. With Rowling, however, we suddenly had a very powerful woman, who was known for being a Labour voter and campaigner, saying that being transphobic was a core part of her beliefs as a feminist left-winger, and it made all the other transphobic left-wingers either adopt her views, or come out of the woodwork. Suddenly The Guardian is getting a reputation for writing transphobic articles in the name of âfeminismâ and becoming a hostile place for transgender journalists to work; suddenly, the BBC, which is supposed to be a centrist news outlet, starts publishing a lot of articles about detransitioners and linking people âwho want to learn more about the trans issueâ to transphobic organisations; suddenly, other left-wing feminist writers come out of the woodwork as being TERFs (Germaine Greer wasnât a surprised, but, for some, Caitlin Moran was).
Suddenly, TERFs become the face of British Feminism (and especially British Lesbian Feminism), with some big-names as figureheads, and with the full force of the British News Media following suit.
Rowling becoming a TERF is what changed the conversation about trans people from âtheyâre a marginalised queer group that only bigots hateâ into this shitty, fake âconflictâ between âwomenâs rights and trans rightsâ, and this was what makes the UK so toxic and transphobic. Proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act were stopped explicitly because TERFs were able to spread the idea throughout the news media - both left-wing and right-wing presses - that allowing trans people to self-identify would make the world more dangerous for Real Women and would thus be anti-feminist, and this is what sunk those changes. The actual polls put out by Stonewall reflected that most people are not transphobic (even though TERFs tried to manipulate the polls), but the news media were able to maintain a unified transphobic front that told a different story to the government, similarly to how Brexit came to be (because yeah, before anyone forgets: splitting from the EU was something that journalists, like Boris Johnson, put forward and repeated enough in the news that it suddenly became this big issue that the Tories felt they needed to act on in order to remain popular).
The assumption was that the polls must have been manipulated by pro-trans bots, created by The Trans Rights Activists, because the news media had all universally decided to tell the public that trans women were evil, misogynistic predators, and the government decided to believe that over the actual results of the survey. Let that sink in.
Rowling becoming a TERF wasnât the only thing to make the UK transphobic, it just encouraged the left-wing to follow in her footsteps.
