On Material Design
In 1977, Massimo Vignelli was hired by the National Parks Conversation Association to create a system for park variety of brochures. Named the Unigrid, Vignelli took the variety of brochures the organization produced and developed a system to unify the output. The Unigrid documents fonts, type sizes, column widths and folds, and recurring design elements and layouts. As much as I admire Vignelli’s work, from the American Airlines logo to the infamous New York Transit Map, this could be my favorite project of his. The Unigrid is still in use today.
Vignelli, of course, did not design every single brochure or publication, but created a framework that allows anyone—from receptions to park managers—to create a new publication when needed. If they follow Vignelli’s Unigrid, it will fit right in with every other brochure.
