Hi there: I enjoyed looking at your photos, especially of Cairo's varied architecture, the layers of history. I was in Egypt in 1995. Thank you for sharing your wonderful images. Cheers, An admirer in Toronto.

I came back for the light”. He was standing at the window of his empty office. Outside, the sun was slowly setting down over the city. Before him was the Nile, wide an imposing. He let his gaze rest on the other side of the river, enjoying the warm and soft light falling on the ocher buildings stretching along it. Beyond was the Mokkatam hill. In a few minutes, the golden light would be fading away, replaced by a metallic one, harsher perhaps, that engulfed the city in banal grayness. Then, darkness would take over.

Each time I am in Paris I do what I do best: I become melancholic and nostalgic. On so many levels, Paris was a turning point for me. I remember the good times, the great friends, the long walks admiring the beautiful architecture, the rainy afternoons spent at the movies, sometimes alone. But also the frustration of being away during the revolution, the terrible feeling of being out of place and disconnected from my surroundings, and sometimes the small, insignificant remarks that remind you that you are not really from here and that where you come from is far away.
But whenever I am back, passing by all the nice libraries, the city lights, the crowds on the streets, the lovers in the metro, the freedom you can have, the freedom I can have, I can't help but wonder what would my life be like had I decided to stay.
