Callum came into the world as a forbidden secret. He was an unplanned baby born to a teenage girl and a boy whose futures could not be upended by his life. He was adopted immediately by Valerie Hart, a prominent talk show host whose life revolved around lights, ratings, and upholding the persona of “the modern woman doing it all on her own.”
With his mother absent, distracted, and building out her career, Callum was left in the care of his nanny, Mari. She was a grounding force for him, filling the role of a mother to Cal by teaching him Spanish and how to tie his shoes, advising him on navigating the subway system, and helping him with his handful of crushes. Mari taught him love and how to give love in return.
As Valerie’s show grew in popularity, he was leveraged and tokenized as a part of her brand. The quintessential mother-son duo that everyone aspired to be. He quickly became an expert chameleon, blending in, trucking along, and becoming the funny, sweet, and good-natured kid everyone fell in love with. Yet, behind closed doors, Callum lived in solitude.
School was never his forte, but he graduated with passing grades and little ambition. The minute he turned 18, he set his sights on heading out west to get away from the blaring stage lights of his mother’s career. Feeling suffocated, he figured applying to a college across the country was the next best option. UCLA was a shot in the dark, and he only made it a week into his sophomore year before deciding to drop out.
YouTube was an accident. The video he uploaded was supposed to be a cathartic joke of word-vomit. He spoke for several minutes about burnout culture, unrealistic expectations, and the need to have it all figured out by your twenties. It went viral, for people loved his vulnerability and candid take on the topic. Before he knew it, he was bombarded with sponsorships, guest appearance requests, and outlets wanting his essays on their sites.
It wasn’t intentional, but he found his footing in this space somewhat. However, a part of him still felt unclear about who he is and what he wants out of life. A night of taking some shrooms had him contemplating his birth parents. Before he knew it, he found himself in Aurora Bay, California. The two of them were still together and had a family of their own. One knock on their front door changed the trajectory of his life.
They welcomed him with open arms and encouraged him to stick around. Two weeks became a year, and he found himself slowly integrating into the world of his biological parents and younger sisters. It was quite the adjustment at first, but for the first time in a while, he doesn’t feel like a complete and total outlier.
Callum is still a work in progress. He’s learning how to set boundaries with Valerie, reconnected with Mari, is being the cool older brother at the twins' soccer games, and is trying to figure out these things called life. YouTube remains his medium, although he posts inconsistently now. He’s leaned more into freelance writing and is in the process of writing his first book.
