Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

@changes I am a tumblr user of several years. I believe Tumblr is a site founded on uniqueness and community, and that conforming the site to resemble others will damage both those foundations. Tumblr is a microblogging platform that truly is one-of-a-kind. Users are here because they like this experience, and I do not believe current frequent users are seeking an experience that resembles other websites.

I do NOT see these changes leading to an influx of new users or new income for the site. I see these changes alienating a longtime user base that has enjoyed the way posts are structured, and built their use of the site around that structure.

Isolating reblogs discourages communication the way it has been thriving on tumblr for years and, as detailed by others, could be taken advantage of by bad actors.

Thank you for listening to the community. I hope my feedback and the feedback of other users will be heard, and that the Changes and Staff pages are willing to interact with sincerity and bravery.

We love tumblr, and we want to feel that those who staff and program tumblr love it too.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
