I think a lot about how ... pretty? ... Instagram is. Like, we all love to show off our final creations, but we don’t share the hard work behind it sometimes, because that’s messy and doesn’t look as good and shows our mistakes, and that makes us feel vulnerable, and nobody likes looking like they’re wrong in front of uh ... a lot of people, there’s a LOT of you guys 👀👀👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So in that vein here’s my first page of notes from class with @gyounghee yesterday, learning the details of insular half-uncial, a script I’ve only dabbled in before. I make a lot of mistakes. I take a LOT of notes. None of it comes effortlessly and all of it is thanks to the amazing teachers who share their skills with us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I actually feel a bit weird posting it for all the reasons above ... but I still think it’s good to show more of where we start and not so much only the pretty stuff. All right here is some early morning nonsense 😅😅 I’m not great at cutting quills (yet!!) and as you can see the handmade paper defeated my attempts at corners, and my italic is shaky to start with this morning, and the pink sparkly nails aren’t particularly period-appropriate ... but sometimes you just have to nerd out. Practicing with the iPad. There’s a lot more that it can do than traditional copperplate, of course, but most of my work is copperplate so that’s what I put the most time into! . I built this Procreate brush to make it easier to get those square cutoffs without drawing them in. Still really happy with it! Just a little bit of Insta Live detritus 😅😅 I make it look pretty for this shot of course, but in the actual Live I spilled my ink, changed colours four hundred times, called my friends butts, attempted an Italian B wayyyy too many times, smeared at least two names, and probably did about six hundred other ridiculous things 😅 Some people are cut out for glamour. Me ... I’m cut out for calligraphy 😂😂 . All warmed up now and ready to work but I had fun practicing live, so I’ll do it again soon. F is for ... paying respects? 😅😅😅 I don’t even play video games, why do I know that? I think I just spend too much time on the internet! . I’m back from Brisbane and settling back into everyday life. Teaching flourishing again tonight with my Thursday crew, so I hope they’re as excited about ovals as I am (spoiler: they are, I love this group) and gearing up for two workshops in Melbourne on 22 June - introductory miniscule, and a majuscules workshop for beginners and advanced. I feel like every workshop I teach makes me a better teacher, and I really love doing it ❤️ I mean, oh no, I have to spend a day talking about my favourite subject to people who also love it, so terrible 😂😂😂 . I always teach classes with walnut ink, because it’s a great and reliable ink that helps make life easy for beginners, and more importantly, it’s easy to clean up and I want my venues to let me come back 😅 But this crazy combination of gold powder and pink gouache is making me never want to use anything else 😍😍😍 Do you think @brighthq.venue would mind if I stained everything in their building bright pink on Saturday? Just a little? Pink looks great in a conference room, right? . (I’m joking, if you’re reading this, @brighthq.venue 😅 Please don’t ban me, I love you!) . I won’t bring it to class ... but I’m pretty sure it’s finding its way into my travel kit anyway. I’ll be in Brisbane for a few days, I can’t possibly be away from the sparkly for that long! E is for ... elephant. I was going to go with something like pastels, but there’s no way I could convince anyone pastel started with an E. Even the cat looked scornfully at me when I told him. (Okay, maybe that was just because it’s dinner time.) . So yeah, I touch up my lettering whenever i need to! I hesitated about posting this one too - because some tiny part of me is worried that if anyone finds out I don’t make perfect letters they’ll set me on fire? I don’t know, who knows? 😅😅 Our brains do weird things sometimes. But there’s no cheating in calligraphy. If you’re not happy with something, fix it. If you make a mistake, erase it. Nobody’s gonna mark you on the process. Here’s something I don’t often do: use a fountain pen instead of a dip pen! This one is a bit special though - it’s about three times as old as I am 😂😅 Like me, it’s nothing glamorous to look at - but it’s how it works that counts, right? The nib is soft as butter and the barrel might be worn and faded, but it’s been beautifully restored and it works perfectly. ❤️❤️ . (For the nerds: it’s a 1920s Waterman 52, a lever filler, black chased hard rubber, very tired ☺️ I know some of you will ask! It’s definitely the most flexible fountain pen I’ve ever used, but it still doesn’t match a dip pen - my heart will always be with dip pens 😅. But nice for a change though!) . D is a tricky letter because we all, all of us, always, start off by making the bowl too wide. C is for Classes- maybe? And for copperplate and for calligraphy and, you know, another few thousand words 😅 But I’m in class planning mode, getting ready for Brisbane on 11 May - that’s this weekend! - where I get to meet and shout about ovals with a bunch of new calligraphers for a beginner class, and some good friends and calligraphers as we work on flourishing in the afternoon. This week’s Art of Dining #artofdining at @ngvmelbourne has kept me a happy busy calligrapher! I worked on pieces for three of the tables, each table completely different in style and requirements, each table just stunningly beautiful. I’m honestly so lucky to work with some of Melbourne’s top events people - I love seeing the work that goes into events like this, and it’s always so exciting to be a part of it, even just a little part! .
