what reading the bronze horseman feels like
sometimes i go through life and i meet people with scales when others don't have any and they give and give and give
So I recently fell off on reading altogether, but I just finished almost 1k pages of The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons and it's a little awful in the most human way. I think I went a little crazy when Tatiana was so insistent on never telling her sister the truth. Every time Alexander kissed Dasha, spoke to Dasha, looked at Dasha even, I wanted to look away. Then came the war. Then Pasha. Then Lugo. Then the deaths, one by one by one. Alexander's promotions at the cost of his soul. Tatiana's burnt hands. His broken back. Their baby. And most of the time, I found myself thinking someone save these stupid people from themselves. Yet, despite all of it, I fell in love with how they fell in love. I wanted to cry over her crème brûlée ice cream and his crème brûlée eyes. I read it in the morning, at night, on my way to work, on my way home from work, through lunch and through dinner. I couldn't stop, I couldn't look away. It's like Paullina Simons transported me to Leningrad and I felt my heart break over and over and over again.
you know what would absolutely cook? if operation true love was actually a prequel for a time skip BL where they have all this history with each other and lose touch for 10 years and suddenly dohwa is an idol when he never wanted to be one and eunhyuk has commitment issues and is quite literally some rich ceo and they meet and- su-ae beats jellypop and becomes a writer and lives her best life
When I say both Kai Azer and Aaron Warner are both victims of booktok but in completely opposite ways because Kai is just an amalgamation of tropes shoved into one body. He's only 19, his entire personality revolves around one girl, he's all smirky and confident and so sad but no one thinks about that. It's like his existence is catered to people that are ten or so years older than him that gush about how hot he is online, how obsessed he is with Pae, how he's just the perfect man. The most interesting thing about him is his relationship with his siblings but both of those are so tragic. His older brother marries the love of his life, who happens to also be his brother's half sibling but he isn't disturbed by this, how can he be, when all he's allowed to be is jealous? He sleeps with Paedyn on his sister's grave. His sister, whom he loved and cared for. His sister, who is only mentioned to serve the interest's of the love interest, as an explanation to "aww he can braid hair too?". Warner, on the other hand, came to life well before TikTok itself existed. He unintentionally ended up creating the tropes that characters like Kai Azer mimic. His personality and story, albeit flawed, was authentic in a way Powerless isn't. There's so much to Warner and I think Tahereh Mafi more or less does him justice, but with the rise of booktok came the rise of one million Warner dupes. He isn't just Warner anymore, he's "lyhfml," "machete scene," "oh my god warner looks so hot working out" and there isn't a particular problem with that. It's when people sexualize him to the point where you don't know who he is outside of how is presented online. Not even in the books, but in general. He's also, like Kai, only 19 in the original series. Disclaimer that these are simply my opinions in a sea of millions. You can 100% disagree with them. I'm also not trying to flame booktok here. It just changed YA romance in many ways and Kai Azer is such a good example of it. I honestly feel kind of bad for him and everyone else in Powerless. They had so much potential to be more.
i miss him and his watermelon eyes
is he vanoe's secret lovechild
LMAOOO WHO THE HELL IS THIS IM CRYING
If you like this, perhaps you should try this: a mini recommendation post for books, manhwa, and vice-versa. 1) If you like Alchemised by SenLinYu, you should read My Beloved Oppressor by LICO
Despite having very different plots, the thing that stands out to me the most about these two is the intense dynamic between the leads. I think if you like Alchemised, you would be able to appreciate that Heiner from My Beloved Oppressor is far from perfect, yet is equally compelling in his own way. That being said, the highlight of My Beloved Oppressor is actually the main character herself - Annette. This story does a really good job of showing her growth. On top of all this, the art really fits the tones! 2) If you like Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid, you should read Melting Point by PIBI
I'm gonna just say it: I like Melting Point a lot more than Heated Rivalry. I read HR before it exploded in popularity (albeit it was still very successful) and enjoyed it, but my heart belongs to Melting Point. So Ian is this super popular hockey player that's Korean-Canadian and Eunsan is working for a sports company. He's also divorced. Did I mention he just got divorced? Anyway, Ian signs an agreement with Baek Eunsan's company and they have some very wholesome-ly intense chemistry. I don't want to spoil too much but the yearning is top-tier. He's such a romantic I actually sob reading this.
3) If you like Emma by Jane Austen, you should read Miss Pendleton by kkomak and Yu Hyemin
They have a pretty similar aesthetic! Laura Pendleton is London's finest matchmaker that's sworn to be single forever, and yet, she finds herself befriending the "stoic and saturnine Mr. Ian Dalton of Whitefield." You can guess where this is going. It's really beautiful and the official translation on Webtoon makes it very immersive to its era. I highly recommend if you're a Jane Austen fan!
shinji's crashouts were so legendary they took all the ugly, human emotions i ever had and put it on netflix
error detected is currently giving between the lines
i miss reading this when it first came out when i knew nothing about the plot except that it was cooking, taekjoo had a more masculine design whereas zhenya was the prettier one and they were sort of kind of friends
manhwa got so ahh that i keep thinking of crackships but specifically these two because taehee is mostly evil and maybe he should corrupt na haesoo and make her evil so they can be evil together (also realistically cute height difference) and then beom taeha and mincheol have potential to be the best worst age gap enemies to lovers love triangle imma steal ur wife but fall for you in the process type ship (also they both look good... together) im just saying it'd be so toxic and i'd 100% read it
i love love love characters that are hopelessly devoted like ryu ian from melting point (bl manhwa) and heathcliff from wuthering heights (classic) and jude from oleander (great expectations retelling) or helena from alchemised (dark fantasy) or ivan from alien stage (youtube)
characters that are like i've loved you my whole life and i'll keep loving you forever despite you not loving me back or i will love you for who you could've been and in spite of what you are or you can cuss me out and hurt me but i will never stop loving you or when you die i die even if i'm still breathing
