Of course, fandom funposts aside, anyone can hate a character if they want to, just as anyone can stan a character if they want to. We all have our own personal feelings, interpretations, baggage, etc.
That said, as a certified YQY simp, I have my own thoughts on some of the takes I've seen about hating YQY in defense of SJ (some in the notes of this post, some I've come across elsewhere).
I don't expect to change any minds, these are just my own thoughts:
Take #1: YQY defends everyone except SQQ
It's not as though YQY never disagrees with SQQ or argues with him...however, this take seems to assume that, whenever YQY defends SY!SQQ in main story, he wouldn't do the same for SJ!SQQ.
I don't really buy this assumption, especially since the sect meeting in the Airplane extras "definitively proved" to everyone that SQQ wasn't possessed (and obviously, nobody but SY knew about The System).
But even ignoring all those moments in the main story where YQY simps for SY!SQQ, we still have:
YQ defending SJ to SW by saying "that wasn't bullying, Shiwu, Xiao-Jiu was just joking around," even though he just ran over because he saw SJ about to threaten SW with a brick
YQY never revealing that SJ killed those innocent cultivators with WYZ, and never bringing it up again in any other scene
YQY snapping at LQG when LQG insulted SJ in front of him, and LQG storming off to avoid being lectured (which implies to me that YQY has lectured LQG about it before)
So, even with SJ!SQQ, we still get scenes where YQY either defends SQQ, or excuses his actions.
I also see this assumption that YQY never attempted to defend SJ when he was arrested by Bingge in the PIDW timeline...but we never actually see how the arrest or the trial went down? Anything about YQY's reaction to the arrest, or what he did (or didn't) try to do at the trial, is pure speculation.
For example, my own assumption is that Bingge arranged for SJ's arrest to happen when the sect leader was too far away to do anything about it, since that'd be the smart thing to do. He also probably roped in the other three powerful sects so that it'd be harder for CQMS to interfere in the trial.
Take #2: YQY didn't try hard enough to rescue SJ
I think a lot of YQY's behavior makes sense when you look at how impulsive he was when he was young, how his impulsivity led to many failures, and how he then over-corrected by restraining himself. He even describes this exact issue during his confession to SY.
Pulling from this post: what YQY learned in his formative years was that a reckless rescue was not only just as bad as no rescue at all, it was worse.
If we're talking about how YQY didn't personally go to steal back SY!SQQ's body from LBH...well, I have my own theories about his inaction in this post.
(If you don't feel like clicking the link: basically, there's textual evidence that YQY was training in seclusion while SY!SQQ's body was kidnapped, and this could have been another of his attempts to not act impulsively.)
Take #3: YQY didn't tell SJ the truth because he didn't care about his feelings
Tbh, I think YQY was more traumatized by his experiences than gets acknowledged by fandom. I think "guy with communication issues stemming from trauma" can apply not just to YQY, but to SJ and LBH as well. All of them inherited maladaptive coping mechanisms from their fucked up childhoods.
(Meanwhile, SY's communication problems stem more from his "transmigrated book reader" and "held hostage by The System" issues)
Okay those are all the thoughts I had post over goodbye 👋
This is a good perspective on this. This post was made a couple years ago, and since then my perspective has changed on the matter due to the helpful additions of some lovely people.
Of course, this post was just meant to be a joke, but i still appreciate the perspective.
Hello all! This poll is specifically for who I should ship Shen Qingqiu with in my fic Shen Yuan’s Adventures As The Scum Villain’s Son! Please do note that this is Shen Jiu, not Shen Yuan!

Hello all! I don’t usually self promote on anything, but I feel this is relevant to the theme of this account!
I’m writing fanfiction! It’s my first fic, so it will likely be less than perfect, and I am completely welcome to criticism!
Anyway, the fic is called Shen Yuan’s Adventures As The Scum Villain’s Son, and it’s basic plot is that Shen Yuan gets reborn as the son of a woman in the Warm Red Pavilion, and the adopted by OG!Shen Qingqiu

Say what you want about Yue Qingyuan, but HE is the ultimate Wife Guy. His wife was a complete and utter bitch, and he fr didn't care. In fact, he did everything in his power to make sure his wife could be a bitch in peace. Did this backfire on him? Well, yes. But look at his commitment!
People seem to forget that YQY excused everyone's behavior, not only Shen Jiu's.
And that's the problem. He excused everyone, always trying to appease both parties, but never doing the job a leader is supposed to do, which is solving problems among his team.
If YQY was such a hard-core SJ defender as people claim, he would have investigated and shed light on all those rumors that surrounded Shen Jiu.
If he were such a defender, he would have actively tried to make things work between Shen Jiu and the other peak lords, while trying to guide Shen Jiu on the right path. But he never did.
He allowed Shen Jiu to become the black sheep of Cang Qiong, the outcast.
He allowed rumors to fester, staining his reputation to filth, he allowed people mistreating Shen Jiu, despite being in a position of power where his words held the final verdict.
Yue Qingyuan alone could have changed SJ's ending by taking action.
let’s not forget that SJ didn’t want to even speak to YQY, which wouldn’t have really given him any opportunities to defend him. I never claimed YQY to be perfect, i’m just saying that you can’t hate him because what happened between him and SJ was just a huge misunderstanding.
do you think that SJ would have wanted YQY’s help? he probably wouldn’t have, and in all honesty, SJ probably didn’t mind being an outcast from the (mostly male) peak lords all that much
I think I didn't phase my thoughts as clear as I intended to.
I dislike Yue Qingyuans as a character in general.
While I agree with you that SJ doesn't really care about others opinions, we can't deny that YQY had been the most prominent figure in SJ's life. His opinion mattered to him.
SJ throughout the little bits we've seen of him in the book, says things he doesn't mean when he's overwhelmed with emotions. Like that time when he said to not believe in loyalty despite obviously showcasing just that. Shen Jiu by his own free will, revealed that he gave his loyalty to him.
Between YQY and SJ there was no misunderstanding. Much rather a lack of communication. In Canon, SJ' didn't shoo away YQY, in fact he did engage into conversations, as bitter as they were.
From context alone we understand that the reason SJ is "wary" of YQY is because he believed the other to have abandoned him. Which Yue Qingyuan could have explained himself and things would have solved between the two.
Before entering the sect YQY had no problem talking. We see him excusing Liu Qingge's arrogance as "you know that's how he is."
Again, I agree with you that Shen Jiu doesn't necessary care about the other peak lord's opinions of him, but had Yue Qingyuan chose communication instead of excusing everyone' behavior he would have solved many, many problems that arose in PIDW.
What I do disagree with is that I do think that Shen Jiu wanted Yue Qingyuan's help. Otherwise SJ wouldn't have expect him to save him from the Qiu Manor. Let's not forget that during those years Shen Jiu waited for him until he couldn't anymore.
This is my personal opinion and my personal analysis of Yue Qingyuan.
And I'll be honest, the fact that in both SVSSS and PIDW he didn't lift a finger when SJ/his corpse were taken by LBH makes me question YQY's relationship with SJ.
The fact that he didn't do anything to clear his name/retrive his body makes me believes this "relationship" to be one sided.
People seem to forget that YQY excused everyone's behavior, not only Shen Jiu's.
